Wolfram Research has released Mathematica CalcCenter 3, a "lite" version of Mathematica that's aimed at "migrating Mathcad, Maple and technical Excel users fazed by the full Mathematica but wanting its trustworthy results and industrial-strength performance," the company explained in a press release.

The application is actually an update to Wolfram's CalculationCenter 2 that offers several new features: support for computations with exact fractions, support for vector and array functions in numeric solvers, optimized numerical solvers for ordinary and partial differential equations and more.

In addition, Mathematica CalcCenter 3 offers data analysis speed that matches Mathematica 5's abilities, the ability to swap notebooks with Mathematica and Mathematica CalcCenter users, better XHTML export, a straight upgrade path to Mathematica Professional and more. CalculationCenter users will need to visit Wolfram's online store to learn about upgrading to CalcCenter 3. The full software is US$595.
