Toyota's 2006 Scion Offers Optional iPod-Controlled Pioneer Stereo

by , 1:35 PM EDT, May 25th, 2005

Capitalizing on a recent trend among auto manufacturers, Toyota on Wednesday announced that its 2006 Scion tC sports coupe, which starts arriving at dealerships next week, will offer an optional iPod-controlled Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo. The upgrade, which Toyota will include for US$260 more, enables iPod owners to plug their MP3 players directly into the stereo. The iPod controls the stereo, which displays track, artist and album information on its one-line display. and receives constant power from it.

Not me my son, he has been saving up for a Scion. As for me, I need an iPod controlled sound system in a mini-pickup truck. I have been using an FM transmitter to listen to my iPod in my truck, but there is some interference.

Good job, Toyota. You're only a year late. GM already has this capability in over a half-dozen vehicles, including the Solstice, Cobalt, LaCrosse, and minivans and MP3 adaptors will be available on virtually all upcoming models.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't GM only offer a line in (which has been included in many after market stereos for around a decade)? That is, you'll get the sound on your car stereo, but no display of track in, and no changing tracks with the steering wheel or head unit controls?

Besides, with the possible exception of the Cobalt, these GM vehicles you mention are hardly going after the same demographic as the Scion.

A year? What was so magical about 2004? I could have used an input jack back when I got a protable CD player but my car still had a tape deck. And I'm not old enough to say for sure, but I bet that everyone who bought a walkman would have loved a way to plug those into their older cars' radios.

Some sort of audio jack should have been standard in cars TWENTY years ago, not just last year. So Toyota's 20 years late and GMs only 19 years late. Good for them.

I hope Toyota also makes it available for other models, especially the Prius.

It'll be like credit cards at fast food places. Once more than one of them did it then everyone else HAD to do it just to keep up.

I'm sure you'll see this on every model very soon.

There are several direct-connection systems available. Check out these:

(BTW, that does work with the Prius. I have the unit in my 2004 Prius.)

The ipod2car seems to have a wider range of models that it is compatible with. Mine works somewhat well: it plays perfectly, but the iPod doesn't always respond to the "Mode" or "Power" controls by turning on or off. It has some quirks about changing songs, too, but I haven't really tried that very much, as I generally listen to audiobooks or podcasts of radio shows. The ipod2car takes the place of an external CD changer--you can still use the internal CD player.
