Jobs Confirms Paris Apple Store "in 2007", Report Says

by , 7:00 AM EDT, May 25th, 2005

Apple Computer will open a retail store in Paris, France "in 2007", the company's co-founder and CEO, Steve Jobs, told a reporter for the French news site MacPlus.net, Tuesday.

Touring Apple's elaborate retail store in London on Tuesday with Jonathan Ive, Apple's vice-president of industrial design, Mr. Jobs was asked by a reporter for MacPlus about an Apple store in Paris and when it might open.

"Opening in 2007," Mr. Jobs answered quickly. Mr. Ive also repeated the same comment.

The reporter was unable to get either man to confirm other details, such as a location.

Apple presently has six locations outside the U.S. -- one in Canada, three in Japan and two in Great Britain.

Well, Paris is closer to me than London, but still too far away, really. I hope the reason it will take until 2007 is that you are too busy builing an Apple store a short train ride away from me in SW Germany.
But why is it taking 18 months to build this store?

Maybe they are still looking for the location, or they have a location but need to wait for the current tenant's lease to expire. Also If it's like the London store, a flagship within a special historical building, they'll have to design yet another unique floorplan, which takes time and which Steve would probably go through several drafts before he accepts one.

Right on the Champs-Йylseйs. The best address if you want exposure and lots of foot traffic. Similar to Regent Street.

Problem for Apple is that the Apple Store employees are supposed to be customer focused, friendly but not overbearing, knowledgable about the products and willing to help. These are not qualities common among Parisians.

Just import nice californian girls. You would see sales skyrocket as customers try to pick them up.

It surely is a non-founded announcement. it does not take 18 monthes to open a store.
Now sales manager in France know what they have to do

If I said "I'm going on vacation to Florida this July" would you tell me it doesn't take 5 weeks to get there?

They don't have to start building a store the minute they announce it. They can probably only open so many stores at a time and that's the next free spot they have.

Subject: Apple stoes in San Jose, Costa Rica

I noticed the article mentioned only 6 stores outside of the US. I haven't seen this reported anywhere, but in my recent visit to Costa Rica, I saw two Apple retail stores that were about to open. One was in Multiplaza Escazu and the other was Multiplaza del Este.

Both had characteristic Apple black panels outside of the doors along with wood floors. Interesting that Paris is waiting for their first store and San Jose is about to get two! Apple must see quite a market in Costa Rica!

Subject: Well, Apple is not actually that interested in Costa Rica

The two stores you saw, now are about three... There's another Mall where they recently opened one.

This stores are look-a-like Apple stores but are just plain and simple re-sellers that buy from a distribuitor in the US.

Therefore, prices are from 25% up to 100% higher than in the US. Not a smart place to buy Apple products, in fact.

So don't get your hopes that high, Costa Rica is still, a Third World Country with a small population, and therefore, not a market interesting enough for Apple -at least not directly-, yet.
