Nokia Debuts Phone-less, Linux-Based Handheld Internet Tablet

by , 7:30 AM EDT, May 26th, 2005

Nokia announced Wednesday it will ship in the third quarter a non-cell phone, handheld tablet for Web-browsing over a wireless broadband connection. The device is Nokia's first true Internet appliance.

The Nokia 770 comes with a 4.1-inch display, weighes half a pound, is three-quarters of an inch thick, 5.6 inches wide and 3.1 inches deep.

The tablet (see photo below) uses the Opera browser and comes with a stylus to tap on a virtual screen. It is based on the open-source Linux operating system rather than the Symbian platform Nokia uses for "smart" mobile phones.

Priced at US$350, the tablet will be marketed at those wanting true mobility to surf the Web and collect e-mail. The device is designed primarily to use at home, though its Wi-Fi transmitter can also connect with public and commercial hot spots.

Nokia says the device is not intended as a rival to Apple Computer's iPodiPod or other digital media devices.

The tablet doesn't have a built-in hard drive, but instead 128 megabytes of on-board flash memory. It does come with a memory card slot to add additional storage and a USB port to connect with a PC and a Bluetooth transmitter that can then be used to connect to the Internet via a cellular phone.

Tablet PCs make up only about 1% of laptops sold and have been a technology group Microsoft has been pushing hard to develop and sell over the past two years.

At $350, some find Nokia's device expensive. "What does it really do that people cannot already do today with a (laptop) or with a PDA that has integrated Wi-Fi?" commentedlaptop analyst Samir Bhavnani at researcher Current Analysis to USA TODAY

Think Apple could (or is about to) improve on this concept? How about having it intregrated with your iTunes music on your Mac or PC and allowing you to play your music through to the home stereo (without having to run to the computer to select music). How about using this to control transmitting video to the home tv to watch iPhoto slide shows; iMovie videos? How about being able to download music from iTunes with this device? Networks with your Mac or PC so that everything is stored on your computer, but the tablet gives you the opportunity to access it (much like networking iTunes over a computer network). Seems like this might be the direction Apple could be heading for a Home Entertainment gizmo. Let's hope!

I don't think there is much of an argument against on-screen keyboards anymore. If people are willing to hit the # keys on their phone multiple times to cycle to the proper letters for text messaging, then on-screen keyboards, however cumbersome, are a major improvement in my opinion.

Or if it is an Apple product, why not have the scroll wheel scroll through the alphabet to get to the right letters. You could tap the up or down arrow to move in larger increments and then scroll to the specific letter you want and tap the center to move to the next letter.

If you want small, fast input, look at the frogpad, www.frogpad.com. One handed, perfect for use in a car... where you only have one hand to work.

I hope you're not using any PDA in a car while driving, regardless of how many hands it requires. You hands are only a small part of driving; your eyes and brain play a much bigger role.

Think "hardware widget... an extension of your desktop" or something of the sort. Control iTunes, bring up a DVD's menu on the tablet while seeing the results on screen, all in a nice dashboard/widget-like interface.

Subject: Brilliant - well done Nokia.

After Sharp botched the Zaurus line, the field is wide open for Nokia. Hopefully Nokia's 770 marketing team is smarter than Sharp's Zaurus marketing team, and this device will have the wide accepance it deserves.

As for keyboards, if you really want one get a folding Bluetooth keyboard - problem solved.

Look for a barcode scanner interface on this device from http://www.serialio.com

It's to big to replace a PDA, to small to replace a laptop. It's just a "gizmo", but might find a niche market. The good part...no freakin winblows on it.
