Intel CEO Steers Consumers to Macs? Or Prepping Another Idea?

by , 3:20 PM EDT, May 26th, 2005

Ashlee Vance, writing for England's Channel Register, takes a closer look at an intriguing comment made last weekend by Intel CEO Paul Otellini at a technology conference hosted by The Wall Street Journal. When a reporter pressed the question of computer security with Mr. Otellini, he said of the malware that plagues many Windows machines: "If you want to fix it tomorrow, maybe you should buy something else."

Many saw that as an endorsement of the Mac, but Ms. Vance thinks he was "simply laying the groundwork for a long, merciless marketing campaign." She cites Intel's release of new dual-core processors, which include security tools for business customers, as evidence that the company wants to eventually say to consumers: "Your current computers are insecure. They're frightening. They're disasters. They are a risk to your business and your home. It's upgrade or die time, friends."

With processor speeds reaching a plateau, Ms. Vance thinks Intel is getting ready to shift its focus to new chips that contain security improvements and other tools. She concludes: "In a larger context, Otellini is clearly waving the flag now for this future product, saying the PCs you have really must be replaced if you want to operate a secure business. It's nice that Microsoft and Intel can benefit from the insecure world they've nurtured for so long."

Hey, I'd LOVE for this to be true.

A world where Intel/MS is telling everyone they have to change their computer is a world where Apple "Switch" ads suddenly seem a lot more reasonable.

I know that Windows, Outlook et al are can be a problem, but is that also true of the CPU? I am not being a wise guy, but I don't know if there are security problems with the chip itself.

It's not that there's a problem with the chip, per se, it's just that Intel (I guess) has ideas for making the whole computer more secure.

It's sort of like they're thinking: "Well, if Microsoft can't get rid of all this spyware, maybe WE can do something about it?"

It's sad that they'd have to think that at all, but face it; If you were making hardware that people ran Windows on, wouldn't you start to think up ways to make the computer work better?

Looks like there is at least a potential problem with the current CPUs

The only way for WinTels to reach the level of basic security we enjoy in Mac OS X is for Microsoft to completely scrap Windows and start over from scratch with a secure core OS, much like Apple did with Mac OS X. And MS-DOS is NOT that secure core OS.

Longhorn will not improve security at all and when it is released the flood of malware will not abate. I'm not saying it will get worse, but it sure won't get much better. The basic design of Windows is flawed and until MS fixes the basic, underlying design of the core OS nothing will change on the security front.
