Apple Recycles iPods For Free, Gives 10% off a New One

Apple Recycles iPods For Free, Gives 10% off a New One

by , 1:50 PM EDT, June 3rd, 2005

Apple on Friday announced that consumers can bring old iPods to any of the company's 100 retail stores in the United States and recycle them for free. Consumers who bring in an iPod, iPod mini or iPod photo will also receive 10% off the purchase of a new iPod that day. The program does not apply to the iPod shuffle. Apple has a Web site that explains all of its environmental policies.

Hrmm...

$599 for an iPod Photo paid and I only get $59.9 back= net cost $540.10
$199 for an iPod Mini paid, and I only get $19.90 back= net cost 180.10.

I'm sure it is worth more to someone as long as it is still working. And for $35 if it isn't working I can send it to http://www.ipodresq.com/

to get it almost good as new.

Even if I send my iPod in for 4 repairs, it still costs me less than using Apple's recycling plan. Of course if I wanted a newer iPod, then it makes sense. But if the iPod I have is all I need, it doesn't make sense.

Well, not really. It depends upon which iPod you have and its condition. In many cases, you'd do a LOT better by selling the iPod on eBay. For example, a fairly new 20GB 3G iPod is going for $122.50. The most you can get in the recycle program is 10% of $449, or $44.90, for the 60 GB iPod Photo.

I'm just talking about the upper end range and lower end range of what you may pay. If I already have an iPod Photo that is damaged, why would I want to send it in and pay $400.10 for a new one, if I can try to get it repaired for $35 up to 11 times before breaking even? By the time I have it repaired 11 times, a newer and more capacious iPod Photo probably will be available for the same price!
