Apple CEO Jobs Tells Stanford Grads to Not Fear Failure
Apple CEO Jobs Tells Stanford Grads to Not Fear Failure
by , 1:00 AM EDT, June 13th, 2005
Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs told Stanford University graduates Sunday not to be afraid of failing and not to "let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice."
Wearing jeans and sandals under his black robe, Mr. Jobs told some 23,000 people in the stadium in Palo Alto, Calif. of his early childhood days, his struggle to make Apple a success, and his thoughts on mortality after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August of 2004.
"I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me," Mr. Jobs said. "It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods in my life."
Mr. Jobs began by reminding graduates of dropping out of college and that Sunday's ceremony was the closest he had ever gotten to a university graduation.
He admitted his biological mother was an unwed graduate student who had planned to have him adopted and that his adoptive parents did not have college degrees. Although his parents paid for his college courses from Reed College in Portland, Ore., Mr. Jobs said he dropped out to save money and concentrate on topics that interested him most, such as a calligraphy course that later inspired him to design different fonts in the first Macintosh.

"If I had never dropped out I might never have dropped in on that calligraphy," Mr. Jobs said. He said he lived off 5-cent soda recycling deposits and free food offered by Hare Krishnas while taking classes.
"It was impossible to connect the dots looking forward," Mr. Jobs said. "You can only connect them looking backwards, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future."
Mr. Jobs admitted that his success at Apple and NeXT wouldn't have happened "if I hadn't been fired from Apple. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did...I was a very public failure and I even thought about running away from the valley. It was awful tasting medicine but I guess the patient needed it."
The 50 year old Mr. Jobs turned serious when talking about his fight with cancer last year, admitting doctors expected him to live no longer than six months.
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life," he commented. "Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice...Remembering you are going to die is the best way to avoid the fear that you have something to lose."
Mr. Jobs underwent surgery last August and said he has fully recovered.

Would love to hear that speech!
Yes, I would love to hear that speech. I saved some of the quotes from the above article to my folder of famous quotes.

Definitely one of the best commencement addresses I've ever heard. Maybe someone has a transcript or recording of it? Definitely amusing moments also - Jobs, who dropped out of school, addressing college graduates. The calligraphy class leading to Mac typography, "and, since Windows just copied the Mac!" (which got a great reaction) computer typography in general!! And also Jobs on getting booted out of Apple in 1985: "How can you get fired from a company you founded?" (or close to that) And his advice to be aware of your own mortality and also to not be afraid to take your own path and completely ignore the advice of others. (He didn't warn against becoming a driven egomaniac, but hey, whatever works!) It also wasn't too long. It was perhaps some classic graduation themes, but the personal connection to Jobs himself is something I've never heard before from Apple's CEO. It's one thing to read it in a Jobs biography, and quite another to hear it directly from the man himself! All in all, an excellent speech - if other commencement speakers could follow Jobs' example, graduations would be much less boring.
John Hennessy's introduction was also impressive, pointing out the huge impact that Jobs has had in developing Apple, the Apple ][, the Mac, iPod, iTunes, Pixar, etc.. I've never heard him wax so positive about anyone before - I wonder if he had a lot of convincing to do to get Jobs to speak? I also wonder if he felt he had to butter him up to get him on his good behavior? Well, it definitely worked, in any case!!

At the Stanford Report, they have a clip of the last few minutes of Steve's speech:
