Audible Launches RSS Podcast Feeds of Periodic Content
by , 12:00 AM EDT, June 27th, 2005
Audible Inc. has announced that its periodic audio content, such as The Wall Street Journal and Charlie Rose, is now available via RSS (Really Simple Syndication) podcast feeds. The company noted that while the feeds are initially available only to Audible's customers and content partners, they're the first in a series of tools that will support podcast publishing.
Audible also explained that customers can still use current delivery methods to receive content, if they'd prefer not to use podcast software. All of Audible's content works with over 135 compatible devices, including Apple's iPod. "We've only just begun the process of enabling content partners of all sizes to podcast on the Audible platform," Audible CEO and Chairman Donald Katz said in a statement.
"Over the coming months, podcasters will have increased access to new infrastructure, tools and proprietary technologies that Audible has developed over the years to empower content creators to turn their digital audio into sustainable revenue streams."
Former MTV VJ Adam Curry, who created the podcast software iPodder and hosts the popular show Daily Source Code, also said in the same press release: ""There are three companies that have the potential to be huge in podcasting and in creating this new medium. Apple, Microsoft and definitely Audible."
Apple will add podcast support to iTunes with the release of version 4.9, which is expected soon. The company has been reviewing podcasts and will offer a hand-picked selection. At the time it was announced, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that the company was only going to offer free content at this time.

This is good news for Audible (one of my favorite consumer technology companies), Apple and iPod owners who seek to use their devices for music and more.
If Apple is to sustain its leadership in the mobile digital content delivery device market, embracing Podcasting and assisting in its growth is an essential step.
