Yet again, Dvorak poses another interesting and very plausible viewpoint. He has spoken the truth in a lot of instances before, and this, as it might seem, might be another such case.

I have nothing against AMD (in fact, I will be putting together an AMD-based system very soon) yet this seems more like hype (strangely, something that Apple is king at) and less like a real contention with Intel's business practices. It looks like just another case of "picking on the big boys" that MS has had to deal with for years (hardly ever actually "losing" a case, but more often than not, simply just going for a settlement).

I wonder if some enterprising hacker will find a way to swap an Intel chip for a close equivalent AMD chip (for whatever reason - speed, etc.) on the new Apple motherboards?

This might have been possible seven or eight years ago, back when both AMD and Intel were both using the "Socket 7" interface. Today they use drastically different socket formats and CPU architectures. It was a pretty big challenge for ASUS just to get a Pentium M (socket 479) CPU to work in a Pentium D (Socket 478) motherboard. It would be about as easy to get an Athlon 64 chip to work in an Intel motherboard as getting an IBM 970 chip to work.

The best hope I see to use OS 10.5 on an AMD chip, is for someone got bypass Apple's DRM that I expect to be very similar to the M$ Windows XP Validation process (ie: tied to a specific hardware configuration).

I really believe that the top tier manufacturers are getting pressure from Intel not to make competitive AMD systems. I was entertaining the possibility of getting an AMD laptop, but the only ones with a decent graphics chips are $3500. HP makes a mid range Athlon 64 4000+ but it has a cheesy integrated video system. Where is the HP Athlon 64 with a Radeon X700 or a Geforce Go 6800? I think they are not making them because Intel does not want them to.

AMD's architecture is pretty much the same as Intel's so rather the hackers will try to get the locks out of Apple's new OSX so that it runs on every x86 platform even with an AMD processor. I think that soon after the release of the first Intel powered Macs there will be a hacked version. Even if you need an Intel processor it would be cheaper than buying a new mac
