Maki's PodSmith Turns iPods Into Security 'Key'

Tokushima, Japan-based Maki Enterprise Inc. has released a new security solution that uses any iPod as a digital 'key'.

PodSmith v1.0.0 let's Mac users use any iPod digital media device as a security 'key' for their Mac. Unless the iPod is connected, it will not allow a user access. Users can lock and unlock the screen by mounting and unmounting their iPod.

In addition, specified folders or files can be locked by unmounting the iPod and specific applications can be selected for access while other can be locked out.

PodSmith requires Mac OS X 10.3 or later and retails for US$20 for a single user license, up to $500 for a 100-user license.

News of PodSmith comes as a number of research reports surface warning companies to ban office use of portable storage devices such as iPod's because they can spread viruses or steal critical corporate data.
