Apple Offers Office Deal to Students & Teachers

by , 7:25 PM EDT, July 27th, 2005

Through the Hot Deals pages for the Apple Store and the Apple Store for Education, the company is offering rebate discount on Office 2004 for Mac to students and teachers. Until September 16, 2005, you can buy Microsoft Office for Mac Student & Teacher Edition for US$99.95, after a $50 rebate. You can get details at either one of the above to Hot Deals pages.

Apple has updated the Hot Deals pages for ClubMac, MacGameStore, MacMall, and Small Dog Electronics at the Macintosh Product Guide. The Mac Product Guide is a list of Mac compatible hardware and software products on the market. The Hot Deals section of the Product Guide features several Mac retailers and special offers that one can only get, at least in theory, at the Hot Deals page.

The new ClubMac Hot Deals page has offers on a USB pen drive, a wireless router, a wireless camera, a G5 upgrade kit for the Cube, RAM, a FireWire card, and two Office offers. You can find the ClubMac Hot Deals page at Apple's Web site.

The new MacGameStore Hot Deals page has offers on Tropico 2, Football Manager 2005, Zoo Vet, Salvo!, NHL Eastside Hockey Manager, Star Wars Battlefront, some speakers, and more games. You can find the MacGameStore Hot Deals page at Apple's Web site.

The new MacMall Hot Deals page has offers on FireWire hard drives, a wireless router, Office, DiskWarrior 3, Virtual PC 7, an Alien Skin bundle, two Zip Drives, and some Zip media. You can find the McMall Hot Deals page at Apple's Web site.

The new Small Dog Electronics Hot Deals page has offers on curious looking laptop bag, a wireless antenna for PowerBooks, a photo printer, the iPod Tool Bundle from Small Dog, storage, pen drives, some recording gear, a scanner, and Quickerteck's 27db Transceiver for boosting AirPort signal strength. You can find the Small Dog Electronics Hot Deals page at Apple's Web site.

...but that Cube upgrade is a G4. I'd love to see a G5 in a Cube, but this ain't it.

If Apple is giving people a rebate on Office 2004, how far away can be the next release? MS doesn't discount software that much unless it's the last $$$$ they can make off of it....even with teachers and students.

According to news stories in mainstream computing press from the recent MS third party resellers conference (Computing, Computer Weekly) MS are behind schedule in getting users to migrate to Office 2003 (or Office 2004 on Mac).

MS have a target of getting 75% of business users onto the current version of Office before the next one is released, but they are behind schedule in doing this before Office 12 is due, so expect some heavy selling and discounting over the next 12 months.

Office 12 will be an interesting one as it will be based around a new XML based Open document standard.

Uh huh. The key concept is "XML-based, since MS will no doubt pollute it with Windows-specific crap and make it incompatible with All Other Software In The Known Universe.
