DigiTimes: The Mac mini is Built Like a Laptop
DigiTimes: The Mac mini is Built Like a Laptop
by , 1:20 PM EDT, August 11th, 2005
DigiTimes' Michael McManus reports that iSuppli Corp. has conducted what it calls a Teardown Analysis of Apple's Mac mini. After dissecting the computer, iSuppli announced that "Apple has borrowed many attributes of mobile PCs" to cram all of its functionality into a small form factor.
Aside from an external power supply, which is commonly found in laptops, the Mac mini also uses highly integrated semiconductors. In addition, its hard drive and optical drive are in a laptop form factor. Mr. McManus notes that iSuppli estimated the materials used in the Mac mini cost US$274.69, which increases to $283.37 when manufacturing costs are added. The company did not include shipping, marketing and other expenses in either of those figures.

Those guys are friggin' geniuses. Apple and iSuppli Corp both!
Can't you just imagine those first meetings at Apple? "We need to make a desktop computer, but we want it really small. Anyone have any idea how to do that?" "Um, couldn't we just build it like a laptop?"
Genius. I'm glad somebody spent the last 6 months figuring out how Apple managed that feat of engineering.

Yeah, I had the same "No duh!" reaction to the 'news' from that report.
Newsflash: The flatscreen imacs are ALSO based on mobile technology to reduce the cost and size of the units.

Wasn't this known from day one when it was revealed it used a 2.5" 4200 speed hard drive?
How far of a leap in logic is it that if the Mini uses a laptop hard drive, it uses similar laptop parts such as interface controllers and circuits.
I think the news should be that this company violated the reverse engineering clause of their license agreement and Apple HASN"T sued them. ![]()

QuoteWell, it is a Personal Computer. Just because that's usually used to refer to a Windows box doesn't mean that's the only correct usage for the term.Guest wrote:
Morons. They keep calling it a PC... Agh! This is what we have to look forward to? Oh that's right... there are stupid people no matter where you go.

Saw one of these things in Best Buy. Garageband froze and Dashboard sucks. It's slow. Your 32 MB of video memory is enough to get you to the login prompt. Plus it's going to be discontinued in a year for MacIntel PCs.
Mac slaves like to point out how their machines have a much longer lifespan than the "average 3 year life" of PCs but will tell buyers to go ahead and pitch them anyway when Leopard comes out. You know Leopard will cripple this machine.
You really base your opinion of a product by how the demo performed at Best Buy? That's funny.

Yeah it is a PC. Apple put PC's on the map. Damn I hate stupid people who post things without knowing simple facts like this. Or stupid people who complain about the World but just sit around and never do anything about it. People that are so lazy they can't even be bothered to create a user account. But at least it's funny to watch them post twice cause they can't edit their posts.
"They keep calling it a PC."
It is a PC. The term was coined by Steve Wozniak specifically to describe Apple's computers.
"Saw one of these things in Best Buy. Garageband froze and Dashboard sucks. It's slow. Your 32 MB of video memory is enough to get you to the login prompt. Plus it's going to be discontinued in a year for MacIntel PCs."
Sorry, Winbot, but the Mini isn't being discontinued when MacTels hit the market. Apple never even vaguely implied that it would be. You made that "fact" up on the spot. Infact, it's so completely fictitious that searching for "mac mini" + "discontinued" doesn't even return any RUMOURS. Take a look:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22mac+mini%22+%22discontinued%22&sm=Yahoo%21+Search&toggle=1&ei=UTF-8&xargs=0&pstart=1&fr=FP-tab-web-t&b=21
Your claim isn't grounded in fact OR rumour. Just 100% pure Winbot fantasy. So I ask you, proven liar, should anybody believe anything else you say about the Mini?
"Mac slaves like to point out how their machines have a much longer lifespan than the "average 3 year life" of PCs but will tell buyers to go ahead and pitch them anyway when Leopard comes out. You know Leopard will cripple this machine."
Yeah, Leopard sure will cripple the Mac Mini. Just like Jaguar crippled it, right? Or don't you remember how the Microsoft Kool-Aid drinkers were saying Minis wouldn't be able to run Jaguar? I can see how you'd forget, though. I mean, they got mighty silent about that after it was proven that Mac Minis could run Jaguar just fine. Of course, it needed a 512MB of RAM to run it extra nice, but luckily 512MB of RAM is now standard Mini equipment.
Nice attempt at spreading FUD, but it wasn't enough to stop Mac Minis from flying off the shelves. Especially after getting debunked. Try again.

It is a Crapple. The term was coined by Steve Wozniak when he ditched Apple.

Sorry, Macbots, but the Mini isn't being updated when MacTels hit the market. Apple never vaguely implied that it would be discontinued. One day they just would discontinue it thanks to their secrecy policy. Infact, that fact is so well hidden that searching for "mac mini" + "discontinued" on Spotlight doesn't even return any RUMOURS. Take a look inside the Mini, you might break it.
My parents will feed me ground beef tonight OR I'll just have the cat's eating. Just 100% pure Friskies gravy chow. So I tell you, it's proven to nourish adult cats 7 years and up.

Yeah, Leopard sounds like Crapple to me. Just like Jaguar was Crapple too, right? Or don't you remember how cocaine dealers were saying they would soup up Dashboard? I can see how you'd return the mighty mouse after it was proven Logitech would work just fine. Of course, it needed a 512MB of RAM to run it extra nice, but unfortunately 512MB of RAM is all you get.
My parents want me to stop painting the kitchen shelves. Especially after they suspended my allowance. Fry chicken!

In what Universe. The Mini's will be the first Macs WITH Intel chips most likely. One of the new chips. As yet unseen. Run cool, run silent, run deep.
While I have your attention, anybody notice a new trend?
Apple branches out of computers into personal electronics, especially music players.
Gateway branches into consumer electronics (away from their core of cheap personal computers). TVs and the like.
HP branches into consumer electronics (away from their core of printing). Even sell iPods for a while.
Dell branches into consumer electronics including printers and digital televisions.
3 years later. HP and Gateway are abandoning their efforts and refocusing on their core because they have over extended.
Dell is surviving in the consumer eletronics business, though they never branched as far as the margins didn't allow for big growth.
Apple is still plugging away with their core computers AND consumer devices. But not merely plugging away. They have had their best quarter in the company's 21 year history and are outpacing growth of all the other manufacturers. Sure, they had fallen to small "market share" i.e. annual sales, but that has changed, and their embedded customer base, which hadn't shrunk, has now grown additional points.
Yeah, this is a long thread. But what a trend!
Thu Aug 11, 2005 11:49 pm Subject: And the DP G5 …
You know - People really don't know what they are saying sometimes and end up talking a lot of junk - Initially back in 1998 we had Power Macs 5400's in High School and I had a 7300/180 and upgraded it to a G3/300 with a PCI upgrade card - It was a cool computer, but I couldn't bear with the lack of PC compatibility (software was scarse and expensive to buy while I could just get a copy of the same thing for Windows cheaper) OS9 wasn't really fully compatible with Windows as OSX is, so I ended up going back to PCs... Now, with all the windows-compatible improvements that Mac OSX has and easily available cheap software I decided to give them a shot again, so I walked into an apple store and walked out 5 minutes later with a Mac Mini... I don't intend on doing anything more with it than internet, e-mail, office and some light photoshopping, it does Windows and it talks beautifully with my other computers, I love OSX's stability so much that instead of a ThinkPad T23, I am purchasing a PowerBook G4 - I think that the Mac mini is more of a Trailblazer for Apple - Get the people a decent machine for the money, surprise the hell out of them with your superior software architecture, and make them crave for more.
