Apple Updates Safari for Tiger & Panther

Apple Updates Safari for Tiger & Panther

by , 5:55 PM EDT, August 29th, 2005

Apple Computer released updates Monday for Safari in both Panther and Tiger. The company released version 2.0.1 for Tiger and version 1.3.1 for Panther. Both updates have minimalist notes that say simply the update "improves website compatibility, application stability and support for 3rd party web applications."

You can download the update through Software Update, or download them directly from the Apple Downloads page.

Safari Update 1.3.1 is a 3.8 megabyte download. Safari Update 2.0.1 is 4.5 MB.

Application stability is a farce for Safari 10 in 10.4.1 and 10.4.2. Google Maps, eBay both crashed Safari. And the beachballs...

I'll wait for a while. And use Firefox for certain websites.

and incidentally, it's Safari 1 or 2, not 10. What kind of rig do you have?

There's something about eBay and, to a lesser extent, Google Maps that really dogs Safari. My guess is that it's Java-related, but who knows.

Safari on Tiger is definitely buggier than on Panther. Not sure why, but it does odd things like going to the wrong bookmark, or links not working at all, or other oddities. And it REALLY bogs down if left open or if used for awhile. I quit the program now when I'm not using it. Didn't have to do that in Panther.

I use Google Maps quite a bit and have never had a problem with it and Safari

Also I have never had a problem with it going to a wrong bookmark or a link not working with a properly coded link.

Yes Safari slows down over time, it seems to be a memory drain. This was a problem under Panther as well, a number of people have mentioned it. Emptying the cache helps, but every once in a while you need to quit and restart Safari. Go to Apple and fill out a feedback form on all your Safari, Tiger and other Apple related problems, complaining about it here won't get it fixed. http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Not complaining, my friend, just confirming. Everyone has a different experience, depending on their configuration. But you're right - to be constructive, I ought to report the problems.

All the same, I have to agree with treehouse that Safari took a small step backward with Tiger.

Yeah, I agree with you too. I just can't get it why I "need" to have Google sit next to my address bar 7/24!!!

That's 7 hours a day, 24 days a week for those not conforming to standards.

There's a test of CSS compliance called the Acid2 test ( http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/test.html ). The Surfin' Safari blog ( http://webkit.opendarwin.org/blog/ ), run by a member (or members?) of the WebKit/Safari team mentioned months ago that WebKit had passed the Acid2 test, making it one of the few browser engines to do so.

But Safari 2.0.1 doesn't pass the test, so it looks like it hasn't been updated to the latest WebKit. Which is ashame, because even if Acid2 is a somewhat artificial test, there's been several other enhancements to WebKit that the blog has mentioned.

P.S. I hate the word "blog."

Oops... I made it wrong. Thanks for pointing that.

Subject: No problems

I'm surprised to hear Safari complaints. I use it constantly as my primary browser at home (20" iMac G5, 10.4.2, 1 gig RAM) and I've never had any problems with it. No crashes, no slowness, no link problems .... And I had a long session at Google Maps in particular last week, just playing around, and it all worked perfectly.

I really want to like Safari. It has a nice clean interface, even though I really don't care for the brushed metal look. It just seems to be a resource hog. I can feel it slowing up after a bit of moderate use.
Right now I use Deer Park (testing browser for Firefox), and it is much faster, and has never crashed on me.

The only problem here with Safari, is that it is impossible to log into eBay Belgium with it. Note, Belgium. eBay Every-other-country-I've-tried works fine, and I've tried a great many. Happened with the switch to Tiger and Safari 2. Wouldn't be a problem, except that it is not possible to relist items automatically in sites other than those they on which they were originally listed. eBay Belgium insists it's a Safari problem, simply because logging in to eBay BE works with every other major browser, including FireFox, Mozilla, Camino, Opera…

So now I use Camino for eBay and Safari for everything else -- I happen to prefer Safari, finding it stable, fast, easy to use, and so on.

Subject: No feedback option

I think it significant that the link you provide does NOT include the option for feedback on Safari. I suspect that Apple has been inundated with complaints about Safari and just gave up, removing the feedback option. I just wish they'd come out and advise us that Safari is in fact seriously buggy and they are working to fix it. As for me, I now greatly regret moving from Panther to Tiger. Tiger's many benefits are of no use to me, and its problem with Safari is a major pain. I watch enviously as my wife on her old 450 MHz G4 with Panther sails through her web browsing while I struggle with endless problems with my 1 GHz G4 with Tiger.

Under the safari menu, there is an item labelled 'report bugs to Apple'.
