Motley Fool Calls iLife "Apple's Other Trojan Horse"

by , 6:55 PM EDT, August 31st, 2005

Many consider the iPod to be a sort of Trojan Horse for Apple (usually expressed as the iPod Halo Effect), but The Motley Fool's Jeremy MacNealy called Apple's iLife suite the company's "other Trojan Horse."

Noting the iLife gets a fraction of iPod's press, Mr. MacNealy said that "nonetheless, it is a critical component for bringing new buyers to the Mac." Being capable of editing and creating "some of life's most precious moments" is a powerful draw to many consumers.

He also suggested that the software is a gateway product that gets consumers used to Apple's professional editing software (Logic, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, etc.).

You can find Mr. MacNealy's thoughts at The Motley Fool.

Subject: "Torjan Horse"?

That's an unfortunate choice of words if ever there was one. "Trojan Horse" is already a widely-used computer term, and it's...uhm, not a good thing. And thankfully it's also not something Mac users really need to worry about.

Subject: "Trojan Horse" is overused

"Trojan horse" is one of those terms people throw around without any consideration of the the meaning. Everyone knows the story: a gift is created by the Greeks, accepted by the Trojans, and it turns out to benefit the Greeks and hurt the Trojans.

The iPod fits into this category because it is used with Windows, but it makes Windows users want a Mac.

iLife is not used by Windows users. It's not a Trojan horse. It's a Colossus: built by a city's citizens to inspire foreigners and make them want to move.
