Ok, you want me to buy an upgrade for a computer at the cost of $200 when the computer isn't even worth that now on the open market? I've been trying to sell a heavily UPGRADED 9600 for more than a year that (under it's native OS 9) still runs circles around a dual 1.25 G4 under OS 10 in speed.

Even with a G3/1G, it won't run OS X with any speed or stability, has no USB or FireWire ports built in, and still uses SCSI drives inside. The list of problems goes on and on.

Next you'll be trying to sell the eskimoes an icemaker.

These accelerators are perfect for people who have machines with lots of hardware and investment already in them. Where I work, we have more than a dozen Avid ABVB systems, and putting 750GX accelerators into the PowerMac 9600s really makes a HUGE difference.

Also, there's nothing unstable about OS X on 9600 type machines. Speed is subjective, but a 9600 with a 1 GHz PowerLogix (very similar to these) is noticeably faster than a 500 MHz G4 tower. So why not? The price isn't that bad at all. And what's wrong with SCSI when a 50 gig SCSI drive can be bought NEW for $40? Add a $29 PCI card with FireWire and USB 2.0, and you're in better shape than most G4 towers which only have USB 1.1.

One of these in a NetBSD machine really shows the value of the really fast L2. Without heavy GUI work, the speed is quite impressive for such a modest amount of money.

I have an 8500 which I would consider upgrading. Why?

Because I have a bunch of legacy applications which do not run very well in the Mac OS X classic environment. I also have a bunch of SCSI peripherals which are useful, but not useful enough to consider replacing.

Other people may have other reasons. For example: it this is a drop-in replacement, it would be a five minute upgrade. Buying a new computer could involve wasting several hours on reinstalling software and trying to get it working under a new OS (which is sometimes easy, sometimes not).

Depending upon how you look at it, such gadgets could result in a fair savings in money and time. Just because it doesn't work that way for most people doesn't mean that you have the right to insult them.

Oh, and selling icemakers to eskimos (more properly, inuit) is appropriate. There is something called summer in the arctic.
