Apple Sows Confusion with Undocumented Mac mini Upgrades
by , 10:35 AM EDT, September 30th, 2005
Apple Computer is sowing some confusion with its Mac mini customers, some of whom are receiving units with higher than published specifications, namely units with 1.5GHz processors, 8x dual-layer SuperDrives and 64MB video RAM. First reported by ThinkSecret on Tuesday, September 27th, Apple confirmed the strange story with CNet News Thursday.
"Some Mac Mini systems may contain components that slightly exceed the published specifications," Apple told CNET News. "There are no changes to the published specifications or part numbers."
Since there is no mention of new Mac mini models on Apple's website, and the product packaging has not been changed, there's no way to tell if you are getting an upgraded model or not.
This is out of character for Apple, since the company has always indicated upgrades by changing product code numbers, not to mention the published specs for new models.
Seeing as how many Mac mini customers are new to the Mac platform, and most are not buying for raw processing power to begin with, it's likely that few will notice the bumped specs. It's even more doubtful that those who do notice will complain.
Observer Comments
Yeah it really make you wonder why they bothered with the last revision at all. It seems like a waste of time and money since this one came so soon afterwards and was so much more significant. I'd be pissed too if I had bought one right after the last revision. That's always been the best time to buy. Or at least it used to be.

and people like me have been screwed.
And just how did you get screwed? You bought a Mac and Apple sent you what you ordered. That ain't getting screwed in my book. Apple is now shipping faster machines than they were a few weeks ago. No surprise there, that's the computer biz. We've all gotten caught by the speed bump trap with computers. Something faster always comes out a few weeks after you get a new computer. What's more the speed bumps are so minor that I doubt you or I would notice the difference anyway.
Quit your whining. You have a good machine. Get over it.

They are clearing out stock - just as they and all other computer companies do - and using upgrade parts when they need to. Put in a BTO right now and you probably get an upgraded mini. Get one from a store and you probably don't.
Next Tuesday (or the next) there will probably be an official upgrade. Based on comments from hardmac.com related to thin inventories in the pipeline there might be a lot of upgrades fairly soon.
QuoteAre you new to this whole Apple thing? They periodically update their products. You know like on the order of 6+ months in between? So if its been a while since the last revision, you wait until they update it and then you buy. Thus you have the fastest machine for your money for the longest period of time. Thats how we all have done it for a long time. This is the first time that got violated. Especially since the revision a few weeks ago was so minor and this one is so much better (faster HDD, more VRAM). I can see where it would be annoying if you planned ahead and waited and just bought what you thought was going to be the most up to data model for the near future. You'd be the first whiney guest here bitching about it if it had been you.Guest wrote:
Grow up. Just because you bought a computer doesn't mean that Apple should stop improving its products.
You sound like Homer Simpson when he bought a computer "This is the best computer in the world and always will be, right?"

I want to buy a mini for my sweetie. I've been waiting for the inevitable bump to 1.5. Now I see that the mini got a "soft bump". So here I wait, knowing the mini is at 1.5, but won't buy one because it's not Guaranteed 1.5! How silly is that?
But she's limped along with that HP 1.3 for a couple years, and really wants Publisher. I show her InDesign but she's still not impressed. But iPhoto is my Trojan. Hence the mini...
No matter what Apple (or any electronics company) does, SOMEONE is always going to be the last person to get the old model before the price drops or the new model comes out. You can have lots of small upgrades, or fewer, larger upgrades, but you can't slow the pace of technology.
Would it be better if Apple just sat on these new chips and needlessly kept the mini slower then it needed to be?

I really can't believe this: "Mac Miffed" ordered and received a 1.42 gHz Mini. Now, he feels "screwed" just because someone who ordered a 1.42 gHz Mini after he did got 1.5 gHz? Sheesh. The only way Miffed could be "screwed" by Apple would be if he had ordered 1.5 and got 1.42. In any case, the difference is less than *6%*. BFD. If it will make you feel better, stamp your feet, cross your arms, and hold your breath until you pass out. (Seems to work for 4-year-olds.) You got what you paid for. Go enjoy it.

As someone who bought a Mac Mini less than one month ago, let me state how thoroughly disgusted I am with Apple. I've been a Mac owner and supporter for years. I needed a new Mac, wanted a separate screen/processor setup, and couldn't afford a G5 tower. So the Mini was for me.
I waited until after the Mini was refreshed in August, and though I was disappointed with the update, I figured, 'well, it's not going to see another refresh for another six months, so I guess this is it." I put one on order, waited until it came in, and I laid down my money.
Now, scant weeks later, they're shipping the update they should have shipped in the first place, doing it as underhandedly as possible, and people like me have been screwed.
My opinion of Apple has taken a huge nosedive.
So do you always whine when companies update their products to stay competitive? I mean, yeah, I wish that I hadn't bought my new car just months before the updated the model, made more stuff standard and changed the body styling, but get over it. It's not Apple's fault you bought when you did.
In all seriousness, think about what you're saying. It seems your just pissed off because you and a handful of others didn't get the newest thing out there, but don't you think that happens everytime you buy anything? Are you all upset because your 1988 Toyota Corolla isn't as nice as the new model? MAN did you get screwed over!!! I hate Toyota, how dare they make model changes between the last 18 model years!!!!
