Intel Macs Still on Target for June '06; More PowerPC Macs in the Pipeline

TMO Reports - Intel Macs Still on Target for June '06; More PowerPC Macs in the Pipeline

by , 5:50 PM EDT, October 11th, 2005

During Tuesday's conference call with analysts, Tim Cook, Apple's Executive Vice-President of Worldwide Sales and Operations, confirmed that Intel Macs are still on target for shipping by next June. In addition, he said: "I will tell you that we have some very cool PowerPCs in the pipeline, and we are very focused on our current line-up."

Many analysts have expressed concern over the possible risk to Mac sales posed by the transition to Intel processors. When SG Cowen's Richard Chu asked if there were any possible caveats to the current quarter's sales guidance, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer replied: "I am not going to get into everything that we have factored into our guidance. We have given you our guidance, and we are reasonably confident that we can achieve it."

Mr. Oppenheimer continued: "As regard to our Intel announcement, as Tim said, we have seen no obvious impact to our business in the September quarter, but we are continuing to monitor it."

While rumors of a video iPod and other new MP3 players have dominated the talk concerning Wednesday's media event, some Web sites have speculated that Apple will also introduce updated desktops and/or laptops.

Subject: Looking forward to tomorrow

It is probably something more than a Madona iPod, maybe the last hurrah of the Motorola PowerMacs. I am at the point of deciding to upgrade my PowerMac G4 MDD or waiting a year or so until the Intels come out. If they have something fantastic in the way of a PowerMac I may go ahead and upgrade and wait for the second generation Intel Macs.

I wouldn't be interested in a Madona iPod, a Van Morrison special would appeal to me. I wish he, or whomever owns the rights, would allow his old stuff on the iTunes Music Store.

Hm... it will definitely not be good idea to buy anything brand new, like intel macs. It is generally better to wait for the first generation faults to be fixed, and buy on the second. This is why i'm trying to save enough money to get a brand new PowerPC powerbook, before they switch to intel.

I wonder if they giggled any when talking about the Macintels? They’ll be announcing the first one in January, i’m sure. Everybody’s looking to June.

Oh, and Steve did not build all this hype over just a Madonna iPod! This is a real product announcement. A video product announcement. May include a video iPod, but i don’t think that’ll be the centerpiece of the announcement (it’ll be a peripheral, just like the Airport AV he’ll announce). Looking for something like a Mac mini AV with built-in DVR, and maybe an iTMS for old TV shows and a few movies (but not many).

Yeah, there probably will be a pink iPod nano, but who cares?
