myTV.PVR Enables Watching, Recording TV on Macs
myTV.PVR Enables Watching, Recording TV on Macs

Eskape Labs on Wednesday introduced myTV.PVR, a software and hardware solution that enables Mac owners to watch and record TV on their computers. The external, USB 2.0-based hardware unit includes a built-in hardware MPEG-2 encoder while the software allows users to watch live TV in a window or in full-screen mode, pause a broadcast or watch a replay of something that just happened, and schedule recordings on a daily, weekly or once-only basis.
Support for Titan TV, the Internet electronic program guide, ensures that programs are recorded at the correct time. The hardware also features composite/S-Video and stereo audio inputs for connecting to cable or satellite TV boxes, VCRs, camcorders or DVD players.
Pricing is US$149. The kit includes a remote control, power supply, USB cable, FM radio antenna and CD loaded with the appropriate software. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3.8, a 500MHz G4 processor (900MHz G4 recommended), 256MB RAM, 3GB hard drive space, a video card that supports Quartz Extreme and a factory-installed USB port.

Observer Comments
well, just purchased the mytv .pvr from eskape labs. in a word USELESS! do not buy this product! never had a BRAND NEW product for a mac that demands you follow all of these insane directions to update the hardware, none of which made any difference at all. i run a g4 ibook with mega-ram installed, 1.25ghz ….and this thing never worked once. or showed any sign of working. just crashed or showed a white screen….after piddling with this for over an hour…..I GIVE UP! going right back to the store it was purchased from.
very frustrated. also, no tech support, no troubleshooting information, no toll free help number, and stupid grade school typos all over the useless website and readme files.
never posted a review on a product, but felt i must inform unsuspectors that this product is JUNK.

Sun Dec 10, 2006 12:06 am Subject: No surprise, everything Hauppauge does is like this
I tried one of these. It pretty much behaved like the other poster indicated. The G4 PowerMac with OSX Tiger indicated a USB device in its port, but beyond that, nothing. Couldn't get any of the menus to do anything but be all grayed out. Screwed around with driver downloads, nada.
Being a programmer who has used Hauppauge's Windows-based products for years, let me tell you, this comes as no surprise. Their Windows products "sort of" work, but not without a lot of screwing around.
