Aperture Complements Photoshop Instead of Competing
Aperture Complements Photoshop Instead of Competing

Aperture, Apple's new professional photograph management and editing application, is a tool that complements Adobe Photoshop instead of competing with it. Even Adobe sees it as a supplement to Photoshop, according to a Publish article.
Apple touts Aperture as workflow tool for professional photographers who deal with images in the Camera RAW file format. In essence, it's a photography post production studio, complete with light table, packed into a Macintosh.
Instead of including all of the pixel editing and image creation and manipulation tools found in Photoshop, Aperture has a subset of tools for image correction and a powerful file management system.
Kevin Connor, director of product management for Adobe's digital imaging products, commented "It's clear Apple is positioning this as complementary to Photoshop."
Apple even went so far as to include basic Photoshop compatibility by including support for native single layer and flat Photoshop files, Photoshop generated image versions, and opening Aperture managed files in Photoshop with a single click.
Many photographers may use Aperture as a replacement for Adobe's Bridge. Aperture imports RAW images faster, and has a potentially more powerful batch image processing capability thanks to its AppleScript and Automator support.
Since Aperture doesn't ship until November, we'll have to wait and see what effect it has on the products it will compete with, like Capture One Pro from Phase One.

It looks like this product will take over a lot of tasks from Photoshop for photographers, but yes, I can't imagine anyone NOT buying Photoshp because of this.
It's a lot like Motion and After Effects. Motion is great at some things but no motion-artist would stop using AE because of it.
Apple's getting good at making "must-have" products that don't displace other products. It means they can make sales without getting into a war with anyone.
It also means there's even MORE stuff for us to waste money on...but what'r'ya gonna do? Just keep spending money, I guess. ![]()
They have seen a need in the marketplace for a solution that few people even knew they needed, and delivered something the target market can no longer live without!
In Aperture, Apple saw a chasm between digital cameras and Photoshop... and filled that need.
This is where Apple's innovation really shines. When they intro a new product, if it's replacing anything that already exists, the already-existing solution is typically poorly implemented, and just plain clunky. (Think "iPod"... or "personal computer"!)
Now when Aperture 4.0 is intro-ed, let's make the assessment as to whether or not it's after Photoshop's turf.
(I doubt it will, but...)
the next progression (albeit a costly one) from iPhoto which has become sluggish and slow with my 14868 photos! And, while I find it more a Portfolio competitor, I like the ability to be more creative with the book-features of iPhoto and the ability to have upload files for printing.
I see this as simply a natural progression in the way of: iMovie to FCExpress to FCP Studio as one's needs require more features of "known" programs. And, for those new to the Macintosh-platform and jumping in at a "professional" level they are served by Aperature and FCP Studio without knowledge of the iPhoto/iMovie options.
just came from Photo 05 in NYC and saw Apple's big launch of Aperture. No printed docs but received in person 50 minute presentation on its "innovative" features. Sad to report it looks, feels, and functions much like iviewmedia pro <http://www.iview-multimedia.com/index2.php>, the great file cataloging, organizing, etc soft we have used from the little guys at iView Multimedia Ltd, London for 4 years.
Thought they'd be drinking champagne at the iview booth , but sad to say that Apple did not license iview, they just copied much of it without paying. Thought that Jobs etal were a bit more ethical than that. Sad day for Apple.

I don't agree with that at all. I am a professional photographer. Every photographer I know has seen this need. Capture 1, Bibble, DPP, and to some extent PSCS2 with Bridge, are all aimed at filling this need. But Aperture fixes what is wrong with the rest: speed & convenience.
Many of us have opted to skip RAW shooting in favor of the inferior jpg format as a matter of convenience. Yes, a conscious tradeoff of quality vs. time. That decision saved my marriage, as the RAW workflow I'd been experiencing was eating far too much of my time.
But now with Aperture I will be able to implement all of the amazing benefits of shooting RAW into my business, without sacrificing time.
I just have to budget a few thousand dollars for it, as my PowerBook G4 and 2 gigs of CF cards just won't cut it for Aperture & shooting RAW. I'll be needing at least 10 gigs of cards and a much faster computer (can you say quad processing?) before the investment in Aperture will be worth it.
I can't express enough how excited I am that there is a company who understands the ENTIRE need for a RAW workflow application. C1 and Bibble came close, but Apple has clearly set the bar much higher.
THANK YOU APPLE!

Sorry, thought I was logged in before. I'll post again so it's viewed without expanding the guest post.
