Apple Honors Rosa Parks on Home Page
by , 6:25 PM EDT, October 27th, 2005
Apple Computer honored the late Rosa Parks this week by featuring the civil rights icon on its home page. Mrs. Parks, who was featured in Apple's Think Different campaign in the late 1990s, died Monday, October 24th, in Detroit of natural causes. As noted in the comments below, Apple put Mrs. Parks on its home page starting Tuesday, October 25th.
Mrs. Parks came to the forefront of the civil rights movement in the U.S. on December 1st, 1955 by refusing to give up her seat on a buss to a white man. This was against a city ordinance, and Mrs. Parks was jailed and fined. This resulted in her becoming a rallying figure in the civil rights movement.
When Apple launched its Think Different campaign, Rosa Parks was one of the early figures featured in the campaign.
Apple has featured other icons from the Think Different campaign on its home pages, as well as marking the passing of George Harrison, the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, the tsunami of December 29th, 2004, former president Jimmy Carter receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, and others.

Quoteprobably didn't realize he'd be making himself an icon for racism for future generations.
Nah, I can't picture the guy who asked Rosa Parks to give up her seat as looking like that. He'd have to be some red-neck looser who needed someone to feel better then. (Of course now I should go look it up. - off to wikipedia.)

Ellen Goodman (Washington Post/Boston Globe) has written a very good article demythologising Rosa Parks. She points out quite rightly that Parks was not a passive seamstress with sore feet, she was an activist who had had enough.

I disagree with her last sentence, but other than that, it is a very good read.
