TiVo for iPod Doesn't Include Macs, But On the Way
TMO Reports - TiVo for iPod Doesn't Include Macs, But On the Way
by , 1:05 PM EST, November 21st, 2005
TiVo announced a new version of its TiVoToGo service on Monday, but it won't support the Mac. The Mac Observer contacted representatives at TiVo who confirmed the information. TiVo plans on adding Mac support in mid to late 2006.
The new TiVoToGo service will roll out some time in early 2006, and will let Windows users download programs recorded on their TiVo to an iPod or Sony PSP. A trial run with select TiVo users is scheduled to begin shortly.
TiVo has claimed that it is working on a Mac version of the TiVoToGo service for some time, and this would be a perfect time to introduce it. Unfortunately, Mac users will have to continue to wait until later in the year.

About the only advantage a TiVo has over a PVR (personal video recorder) with HD & DVD burner is the program guide. Otherwise, it's an inferior product.
The program guide and being able to view all the recorded show information. I saw someone using a standard PVR/DVR and all you saw was the date/time/channel information, not even a show name. That's fine if you only record a few shows a week that record at the same time every week. But with today's cable stations with shows being shown 5-10 times a week at different times you would never be able to keep track.
I have two DVRs, one that is built into the Comcast box and the second is Replay DVR. I thought the Replay was superior to the Tivo in numerous ways, but the relivant reason is it is easy to get content to my Mac/PC. It stores it in a non-proprietary format (MPEG2) unlike Tivo. There is a great open source program called DVArchive which easily transfer the program to your computer. From there it is simply a matter of converting it to one of the iPod supported codex (MPEG4 or H.264) via Quicktime or one of the other such programs.
