One More Thing: Intel MacBook Pro Debuts

TMO at Macworld - One More Thing: Intel MacBook Pro Debuts

by , 2:00 PM EST, January 10th, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO -- Prefacing the announcement with his trademark statement "Oh, there's one more thing," Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed at the end of his Tuesday Macworld keynote that the PowerBook line is the second Mac to receive Intel Core Duo processors. However, along with the new processor comes a new name: MacBook Pro.

Mr. Jobs said that the MacBook Pro is the fastest laptop ever produced, running four to five times faster than the previous PowerBook G4. It's slimmer than the current 17-inch G4 PowerBook, weighing 5.6 pounds, and it features a 15.4-inch LCD screen that's as bright as an Apple Cinema Display, making it 67% brighter than the one found on the previous model. Like the iMac, it has a built-in iSight camera and an infrared remote port, with Front Row and iLife '06 already loaded on it too, along with Mac OS X v10.4.4.

It has a new ExpressCard slot as well as MagSafe, a new type of power connector that's attached to the computer magnetically, so if someone trips on the cord, it just falls off the computer. Like its predecessor, the MacBook Pro features a scrolling trackpad, an illuminated keyboard and a sudden motion sensor that locks the hard drive if it detects that the computer has been dropped.

The base MacBook Pro, selling for US$1,999, offers a 1.67GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 512MB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM expandable to 2GB, an 80GB 5400 RPM hard drive, a SuperDrive, a PCI Express-based ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 video card with 128MB Video RAM, a DVI-out port for an external display, built-in Dual Link support for connecting a 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display, two USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire 400 port and audio line in and audio line out ports.

The high-end MacBook Pro sells for $2,499 and comes with a 1.83GHz processor, along with 1GB of RAM, a 100GB hard drive and 256MB of Video RAM.

Apple will ship the new MacBook next month but is taking orders for it now.

That would be you getting screwed by the G5 drop.

The Powerbook actually used 68K sour cream and onion chips, not Power PC chips. The first Powerbooks sucked, just like these MacBook Pros will.

But hey, thanks for playing strip solitaire. Maybe next time you'll do some dental hygiene before calling others 'toothless'.

Here's the deal from Apple.

In order to keep the model as thin as it is, they couldn't implement the FW 800.

But..........because there is a but.... They'll start commercializing in the next few days an adapter that you plug on the FW400 slot and get the FW 800 power.

Smart...cuz your machine is thin....and sneaky...cuz u buy an adapter.

Subject: screen size matters here

The specs on the new macbook pro are impressive exept for the firewire 400. Only thing that gets me is that they dont (yet) have a 17 inch model. I want the hugest screen available. I was going to get a powerbook to replace my iBook G4 but now here comes a new machine and I cant buy something that will become obsolete too fast. What shoud I do. I can only stand to wait a little longer... I need to decide wether I should get blazing speed and a 15" screen or high end current technology with a 17" screen. What should I do? And if the 15" powerbook and the new macbook are on slae at the same time for the same price, doesnt that indicate that there may be some advantage to getting the powerbook over the macbook if someone should decide to opt for the Mbook? No 15" powerbook clearance sales yet... they are still 2 grand!

if they want the name 'mac' so badly in the product, why not call it 'Powerbook Mac' which makes slightly more sense.. oh well. my 2 cents

Yeah, that almost makes sense. Powerbook Mac as opposed to what? Powerbook PC/Powerbook Linux?

The name makes sense to me. It's a Mac, it's a notebook, and it's the pro model.

Subject: battery life - 3 hours now, but "comparable" to G4

I asked the Apple folks on the show floor what the battery life was, and they said that they are still working hard to improve it before the final ship date, but that the MacBook Pro should have "comparable" battery life to the PowerBook G4 (which Apple claims has a 5.5 hour maximum life.)

The machines on the show floor, when unplugged from their nifty magnetic power cables, showed an estimate of about 3 hours left in the battery menu, on a close to 100% charge. It is likely that Apple will be able to squeeze additional battery life out by using power-saving features of the CPU and GPU and reducing the display brightness (which is "65% brighter than the PowerBook G4" - that has to use a lot of power!!)

Hmm, would anyone like to post some actual information, such as commentary on boot options, battery life, application performance, classic alternatives, or something actually related to the MacBook Pro and intel transition? How are Photoshop filters with the AltiVec emulation? Did anyone else check on the battery life? Has anyone seen the new system picker? How does EFI compare to Open Firmware? Do the machines run hot? How is game performance? Are they really brighter than the PowerBooks? Etc.

Well, one feature that EFI may offer is to retain the ability to boot into target disk mode, which would be nice. Maybe also boot off of USB?

I think the real info won't come out for a while...once people get their hands on the actual hardware. Until then, it will all be speculation.

Yes, they're both preschoolers, though I do think the other individual started it with the 'Mac Mini DVR is a joke comment'. Pretty weird thing to say, considering it isn't even out yet.

They should both just invest in Apple stock, make tons of money like everyone else is, then they'd be happy and shut up.

Who cares about the stupid name MacBook Pro! I need a PCMCIA card slot that is compatible with my PC Card Adapter/Compact Flash/Microdrive cards! The Express Card/34 will not work with my photography needs. THAT is the deal breaker!

One thing that set the PowerBook apart from the rest was the diversity of the available ports. A user didn't have to go out and buy multiple adapters! Looks like Apple has done an about face. Now we'll have to buy/carry multiple adapters, which is a shame!

As soon as I saw the Express Card/34 slot, I knew I wouldn't be getting a new MacBook Pro. WHAT is Apple thinking? The professional user has been left out in the cold!

You can name it what ever you want, just give me back the ports (PCMCIA card slot, FW800, S-Video Out)!!!!
