Apple Ranked Top Brand in U.S.
Apple Ranked Top Brand in U.S.
by , 8:45 AM EST, January 23rd, 2006
Apple was ranked as the top brand in the United States for 2005 by brandchannel. The number two brand was Google. In the global market, however, the two are flip-flopped: Google took first place, and Apple took second. The rankings are based on which companies had the greatest impact in 2005.
Apple earned its ranking thanks to a year of impressive innovations. Products like the Mac mini, Tiger, and three new iPods, the shuffle, nano and video capable iPod, all wowed consumers and analysts alike.
Here is a breakdown of the top five brands Globally, and in the U.S.:
| Global | US |
| Apple | |
| Apple | |
| Skype | Starbucks |
| Starbucks | Target |
| Ikea | Lance Armstrong |
Brandchannel conducts an annual study in November and December where it asks readers to vote for the brands that had the most impact on them, good or bad, over the last year. For 2005, it had over 2,500 people from 99 countries vote in the study.
Observer Comments
For marketeers, a person can be regarded a brand, even if they don't actually sell something.
For instance, if Jay Leno wanted to pull a high-profile guest in, his producers might consult a listing much like the one above, with the listing tailored to the show's dominant demographic.
I'm not saying Leno does that. For illustrative purposes only.

How much of a draw is a SteveNote address at MacWorld, product endorsement is big money.

I hope that was a joke too and you really know that Michael is Michael Jordan...
I am not that much of sports fan, so I didn't assume he meant Michael Jordan. I am not that much of pop music fan either, but Michael Jackson has more name recognition to me than Mr Jordan. Who is this Jay Lowe guy that was going out with Ben Afflick?
Okay I was just told by my family that I am off for a two seminar so that I can catch up on current culture.
Hey Brian, sorry to get off topic

Yeah. And who the F is Dale?
I am being serious, my first thought was Dale from Chip and Dale, about 50 years ago I had one of their lunch boxes. http://disney.go.com/vault/archives/characters/chipdale/chipdale.html
Now I am really going out on a limb and say that it is Dale Earnhart the NASCAR driver.

Cultural/regional/national differences are all. When I saw Dale I immediately thought of advertising cartoon characters Ches and Dale, of Chesdale Cheese, an ad on New Zealand TV in the seventies.
So Michael Jackson is a brand; Michael Jordan is a brand; Michael Dell, no matter what you think of him, has created a brand. He isn't one himself, but his computers certainly are.

I didn't realize that post would generate such a long list of replies.
Michael = Jordan. Sorry to all the other Michaels out there, but when you can look at a single-color icon of a guy holding a basketball and know who it is (even when you can't stand the sport), you've got a person who's a brand. I guess Mr. Jackson is a brand, too - but, in my mind, he needs two names, not just one. Do I really need to go on a tirade about Micahel Dell? I didn't think so.
Dale = Earnhart. People drive around with his number (and nothing more) on their back windshields and just about everybody "gets" it.
