AppleCare for Displays

by , 7:50 AM EST, January 27th, 2006

Purchase an Apple Display independently of your Mac? No problem. Now you can buy AppleCare for your display, too. Previously, the only way to get AppleCare protection for Apple Display was to purchase the display at the same time you bought your Mac. Just like AppleCare for other products, it bumps your warranty up from 90 days to three years, and covers any accessories included with the display. AppleCare for Apple Displays costs US$99.

Should be welcome news given the vitriol in posts about how expensive display repairs are.

The service itself is good, if needed. I sent a display in on Monday (in the pre-paid box they sent me) and it was back yesterday.

I will be purchasing a new display this year, and I was shying away from the Apple Displays for the very reason that they had such a short warranty compared to others on the market... now I can give them a better chance.... but I'd still rather not have to pay extra for it when nearly everyone else comes w/ a 3-year warranty out of the box.

I've had good and bad experiences with AppleCare. It really would be much improved with some accidental coverage, not going to happen of course.

I believe, John Lewis, a deptartment store in the UK gives 3 years cover on everthing, including accidental damage. If I were buing a new mac, I'd get it from there. (Only problem is, everyone else thinks that too, so they have stock issues)

Yeah throw more wasted cash at a display. Riiiiiight. I hate to say it but Applecare, since it really only covers manufacturers defects and not accidental damage, is for suckers. You already get enough of one year warranty of Apple products - that's usually long enough for defects to show up. If one year isn't long enough then buy elsewhere.

Re John Lewis: I just bought a 23" Apple LCD from them last November. If I recall correctly the free extended warranted only applies to CPUs, as I had to pay £30 for a one year extension to the warranty, but which includes accidental damage. I believe the extension is only 2 years btw. I got the extension due to the history of the colour casts. Colour seems perfect.
