WinTel 2.1.1 Improves Windows XP Support

by , 8:15 AM EST, February 23rd, 2006

OpenOSX announced the immediate availability of WinTel 2.1.1 on Thursday. WinTel emulates Intel's x86 architecture on your Mac, letting you run other operating systems at the same time as Mac OS X. The updated version fixes a problem using some CDs, adds more tutorials and documentation, zero-configuration (Bonjour) network support for Windows XP, and more. WinTel 2.1.1 is available for download at the OpenOSX Web site, and costs US$25, or $30 on CD-ROM.

WinTel 2.1.1 is available in versions for the G4, G5, and Intel processor.

If yes, what was the performance and stability like compared to Virtual PC on a Power PC based Mac? Would love for this to be an "as good" or "better than" replacement for VPC. I need a "Windows" option before I could consider replacing my PowerBook with a MacBook Pro.

I don't think its quite right to mention "OpenOSX" -- which piggybacks off open source projects while unfortunately having a very mixed record on support -- without mentioning the promising projects it utilizes.

In this case, Qemu.

For example, while still imperfect, "Q" over at http://www.kberg.ch/q/ is free, very open about its origins, and very much worth keeping an eye on it. It's looking better every day. ; )

Unfortunately, both Bochs and QEmu are painfully slow running Windows. If you have to run Windows, Virtual PC offers far superior performance.

However, if you have an intel Mac, you'll find that Windows running under QEMU is blazingly fast, totally shaming VPC on either a G4 or G5.

I am running both XP and Windows 2000 under QEMU on my iMac Core Duo and its excellent.

I downloaded (the latest version of) QEMU today and tried to run it - by importing my Virtual XP Pro drive from my PB - but after importing it, it immediately stopped. Damn.

Nevertheless it looks as though it's almost there - if it can be done for free, how come Microsoft are going to take a year to do it? (and how do I know what a rhetorical question is?)
