Safari Gains, Explorer Loses in February
Safari Gains, Explorer Loses in February
by , 10:15 AM EST, March 2nd, 2006
Safari's Web browser market share inched up ever so slightly in February, while Internet Explorer started dropping again. According to Market Share's statistics, Safari continues to hold its third-place position, rising from 3.0 percent to 3.13 percent of the market. Firefox maintained second-place while rising from 9.5 percent to 9.75 percent. Microsoft's Internet Explorer continues to come in with the majority of the market share at 85.03 percent, down from January's 85.31 percent.
Although the change in percentages since December hasn't been large, the actual number of users switching Web browser platforms is significant. Despite the fact that Microsoft pulled its unsupported version of Internet Explorer for the Mac from its Web site in January, there are still enough Mac users to qualify it as a dual platform application, which makes Safari the only single platform Web browser with a significant market share.
Safari's security was enhanced yesterday, as well. Apple released a software update yesterday that fixes a potential exploit in the Web browser.

*yawhn*
Anyway, I'm already starting to cringe, thinking of the millions of boxes of Vista that will soon be glutting every retailer in the country, and all of the myriad websites that it will break.
I remember reading a report a couple of months back that recorded only hits over the weekend, when users were using home PCs rather than the ones they're forced to use in the office.
Firefox had a 20% average share in Europe, with nearly 40% market share amongst home users in France and Germany.

who cares if it should be one or two sentences - except for you
I would expect better grammar in a magazine a book, but here time is a factor.
Now if it was me, and I had the time, I would have wrote that last paragraph like this:
"Apple released a software update yesterday that, among other things, fixes a potential exploit in their Safari web browser."

When you spell properly and have good grammar. Makes people KNOW that you've been to school and can articulate properly. lol Ahhh i'm full of BS, mistakes happen, but one must be always vigilant!
I like Al's line better. . .

Thanks
I regularly receive copy from a client who has an English degree. Excellent grammar and spelling, but almost all of the "and" words in the copy are & characters.
Some people criticize spell checkers, but I have found that they have improved my spelling. I use correct spelling as a game and try to get the lowest score possible.

That anyone was using IE on Mac any more. I would have thought that Safari was in the 80 percentile.
You'd be surprised how hard it is to break bad habits. I stilll am!
Here at my work there are more than a few dim bulbs that just can't seem to click the other brower icons they have in their dock. It's strangely pathetic, but an all too real reality. Look at the White House! What the heck...

*still can't believe how many people settle for crappy old IE when Firefox is around*
Face it. There are a LOT of people out there who can't tell the difference between Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer. (Which was the plan, BTW.)
If you think that you "just use Windows" to search the web, why would you ever think of looking for another program to do it? It would be like thinking about downloading another calculator for no reason.

As long as we're being persnickety, your use of "which" is incorrect - or at least, not preferred. The original article correctly used "that."

Remember, there are THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of computers that are in a corporate environment where the IT department doesn't even *consider* requests for another browser. Seriously!
I'm in a temp job for 2 weeks and I am having to use Portable Firefox in order to use a decent browser. I called to request Firefox be installed (none of the workers have install rights) and the CUT ME OFF twice saying "We don't support that. We only support IE".
This is at http://www.eonline.com, not just some backwards company in the middle of nowhere.
Lame lame lame. And yet true, true, true.[/url]

It was something like 38% in Finland, and getting that way in Germany (where the AmigaOS still has a surprisingly strong following, and Linux is far more prevalent than elsewhere).
The UK is far closer to US in browser usage - it also puts an interesting twist on these web stats in that US IE usage is higher than suggested, while in certain markets (N.Europe) you'd be a fool to write an IE only site.
The real question, of course, is do those Safari numbers represent Mac users switching to Safari, or new Mac users? My hunch is that it might be the latter.
(I 'sold' another two Macs at work last week, after a 30 minute demo of iLife '06).
