Wozniak Start-Up Wheels of Zeus Shuts Down

TMO Reports - Wozniak Start-Up Wheels of Zeus Shuts Down

by , 11:40 AM EST, March 21st, 2006

Wheels of Zeus (wOz), which was started in 2002 by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, has shut down. Al Luckow, the company's former creative director, told The Mac Observer via e-mail: "Sometimes, a product is ahead of its time, not necessarily because it is breakthrough technology, but because the public isn't ready for it."

Wheels of Zeus was developing affordable GPS (global positioning system) technology that could be used by average consumers to track SmartTags placed on individuals or objects. A handheld TagDetector device would monitor all SmartTags associated with it, while the wOz Service would enable users to set various control parameters as well as receive status notifications via e-mail, pager or other means.

Mr. Luckow likened the product to a programmable remote control. "Great idea right now," he said. "But go back 20 years when Woz [Steve Wozniak] first created and marketed such a product to the public (the CL9 Core Remote Control). People didn't really seem to think they needed something like that. End of story, end of company. It happens."

News of Wheels of Zeus' demise first came last Friday via a report on Macworld UK, but that article didn't cite a source. The Mac Observer decided to wait until the news could be confirmed with a company representative. As this article was posted, the Wheels of Zeus Web site contained no information about a shutdown.

Isn't that because he's started up a new company?

"Acquicor Technology, a company launched by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, former Apple CEO Gil Amelio and former Apple CTO Ellen Hancock, raised more than $140 million this week. "

SEC filings dated 13 March 2006 indicate Woz is corporate EVD (?) and CTO without any stock ownership. Another filing indicated he was CTO and Director from August 2005 until November 2005. Listings of Beneficial Ownership names a variety of technology industry venture capitalists with intertwining affiliations. This company appears to be a shot in the dark for emerging companies that could never pass scrutiny on their own.

They were using remotes in the 50s, for crying out loud.

I just think in this case Woz had a solution in search of a problem.

Presumably if his current company was doing well he wouldn't feel the need to shut it down and start a new one. I also don't believe this "public not ready for it yet" BS. For Wheels of Zeus's tech to work they needed technology that was cheap, reliable, and power efficient. I suspect they weren't able to hit their targets on one or more of these measures.

Programmable remotes? I'd never heard of such a thing until the mid-to-late 90s.

Not really, the key there is "programmable". So you can use one remote with multiple devices. In the 80's, most people didn't have more than one or two devices with remotes. So they didn't see any need. Now of course, it's different. stereos, TVs, TIVO, VCR, cable boxes, DVD players, CD players even my camera has a remote. It makes alot more sense now than it would in the 50's.

Sound like a fascinating idea. I like how Mr. Luckow thinks. So many things pop up ahead of their time, but they eventually find their way into use. Hope this will, too.

So that's what WoZ is (was) about! Actually, I find that to be a quite usefull concept. I have no idea how wOz ws implementing such a concept, but one thing that comes to my mind is security. Imagine a lo-jack type of system for everything (above a certain size) else. You could install it in your laptop / pda (wallet/cell/expensive shoes) somewhere (anywhere), so if it get's lost or stolen you (or the police) can track it. Put it in your childs backpack/ wristwatch, your pets collar, etc.

Subject: WHEELS OF ZEUS

WITH RESPECT TO CONFIRMING THE STATUS OF THE SHUT DOWN OF WHEELS OF ZEUS, DID ANYONE ACQUIRE ANY SPECIFICS ON THE MARKETING TECHNIQUES.

I HAVE A THEORY THAT THERE IS INFACT A MARKET FOR THIS PRODUCT I SEE POTENTIAL IN THIS PRODUCT AS BEING A LEASED PRODUCT TO CONSUMERS WHO HAVE CHILDREN IN AREAS WHICH MAY BECOME TO VAST.

USING THE WOZ AS A RENTAL IN A CINEMA OR MALL AREA WOULD BE A GREAT EASE FACTOR FOR MANY CONSUMERS IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY, NOT TO MENTION A GREAT REVENUE AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PRODUCT FOR MANY.

IS THERE ANYONE IN PARTICULAR THAT COULD BE APPROACHED ABOUT THE MATTER. SAFETY IS NOT COST PROHIBITIVE ESPECIALLY IF YOU CAN RE-RENT SOMETHING TO REGAIN THE COST FACTOR AND ENHANCE YOUR BUSINESS POTENTIALS.

SINCERELY
