From Apple's installation notes:"You are unable to log in to the user account (name) at this time."

What's wrong with "right now" or even just "now"?

Why do airline hostesses say, "We shall be landing at [airport] momentarily."? I want to stay for some time - I don't want to hit the runway and take off again. It's "soon" or "shortly", not momentarily. Why do they refer to bathrooms instead of toilets? When was the last time you had a mile-high bath?

Why do we chop a tree down then chop it up? Why do we raise a house to the ground and in the process it burns up?

Just so you know, it's supposed to happen that way.

Does anyone know why this upgrade reboots twice? I do not recall this occuring with other upgrades. Just curious.

Please, I have a dictionary, several of them in both print and electronic formats, and I use them. You should be taking "Guest" to task who quoted me and then added their own question about rayzing a house. Remember we do raise barns, but if you smoke in one you may raze it.

Perhaps, but Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation is about the misuse of punctuation, not words. Come to think of it, a lot of people here could use the book. (For one thing, book titles do not belong in quotes, but in italics. Quotation marks are used for the titles of articles in magazines, chapters in books, and the like.)

Subject: 10.4.6 Upgrade problem

I have a G4 running 10.4.5. Did the Software Update to install 10.4.6. When it was time to re-start, I initiated that. However, the computer stopped at the gray screen (Apple Logo; no gear spin). Tried to get into Safe Mode. Single User Mode. No dice; gray screen. Shut down using Open Firmware process, then tried restarting. Showed blinking question mark for a bit, then the gray screen. Reset PRAM. Same result. Couldn't raise the Startup Manager. Couldn't make the X key work. I loaned out my Tiger Disk this afternoon to a friend who'd gummed up his own computer, so am looking for ideas to fix this without the OS X 10.4 disk, but otherwise will wait. Anyone else have a problem with the upgrade?

so it wasn't just me, my iMac restarted twice as-well. i think it may have reset PRAM because i usually press the mute button to i don't get the start-up chime, and on the first reboot, but sounded on the second. strange, but no problems so far.

I know how book titles should be presented in text, but how do I easily put text in italics when posting on this blog?

I figured that you knew--your posts are usually very literate. This blog/board uses BBCode, which works a bit like HTML. For bold & italics, use B or I in square brackets, like this, WITHOUT the hyphens--I put those in so that it would show: [-b-] or [-i-]. To close the tag, use / before the letter: [-/b-] or [-/i-]. Remember to not use the hyphens.

Another way is to post the message, then choose Edit at the bottom of your post. That will bring up a page that will make it easier. You can insert URLs, images, etc.

I've been wondering about the differing sizes in the updates. The obvious (to me) reason is that the PPC platform is well described and known by Apple so the coding optimisation requires less effort, but the Intel thing, despite being in at least partial development for six-odd years, isn't quite as familiar: the developers are coming up to speed with the - umm - speed.
