Bluetooth Mighty Mouse On the Way
by , 8:15 AM EDT, July 25th, 2006
A recent filing with the FCC reveals that Apple Computer is preparing to introduce a Bluetooth version of its Mighty Mouse. The wireless mouse, code named "M6," looks just like the current Mighty Mouse, but without a USB cable. It runs on two AA batteries, requires Mac OS X 10.4.6 or higher, and includes the same left and right buttons, side buttons, and scroll ball button that its wired cousin has.
The filing does not include any information that indicates when Apple may release M6, but it's possible the company is planning an introduction at the World Wide Developer Conference in August.

On apple.com, it says that the "M6" runs on one or two batteries.
I fail to see the real need for Bluetooth keyboards and mice, except in a few cases--e.g., you hook up a Mac Mini to your widescreen TV and need to control it from your easy chair. Otherwise, what's the point? You're using more energy, burning up batteries (even rechargeables don't last forever), taking the chance that your keyboard or mouse might start failing in the middle of something important because you forgot to recharge the batteries, and spending more money--why? To look "cool"? There might be more justification for the mouse than a keyboard, but it's still a bit of a stretch. If you don't like moving the cord around, get a trackball, which doesn't move.
Please don't come back and say that it's "convenient." That's a very personal criterion. One would have to balance the "convenience" of being able to move the keyboard or mouse a bit more freely versus the INconvenience of recharging the batteries.

I get your point, but for some people wires do get in their way, especially with the mouse. For instance, my desk is very small. I use my leg for my mouse pad. When I let go of the mouse, often the weight of the wire pulls the mouse of my leg. If the mouse had no wires it would be more convenient.
Cost of ownership costs more, but with rechargable batteries, that should not be so much.

Ok. I won't say it's "convenient."
But then why, may I ask, are you allowed to use "INconvenience" as a reason for not owning one? Seems to me that if the subject of convenience is off limits then you shouldn't use it as your main argument.
But if you're looking for a "real" reason for a wireless keyboard, look no further than a VESA-arm mounted iMac. It's a great way to make an iMac even more versitile and it makes a wired keyboard a really big problem to wire.
I myself use a wired keyboard but my Powermac is about 10 feet away from me. That was also a pain to get hooked up in a way that wasn't sloppy. Now, I went to the trouble to do it, but I would certainly understand if someone else wouldn't want to go through all that.

Wireless mouse are perfect with my 13" Powerbook. I wouldn't mind wired mice so much if they put a usb port on the right side of the computer, or even the back for that matter.
I really enjoy having the convenience of not having wire's to get tangled in my bag. Although as said above it's inconvenient to recharge batteries, I already have to do it for a plethora of devices (laptop, iPod, digital camera, etc...) so it's just an added step, not a whole new routine to get into. My mouse also has a red light that flashes about an hour or two before the batteries die, so if it ever goes out during a crucial time it's totally my fault.
Oh yeah! A wireless mouse with a MacBook. Sweet. I could mount my MacBook in viewing range of my PC monitor at work (which would be out of arm's reach) but still have control over it, thus providing the much-needed OS X karma balance necessary to get through the day while labouring with the burdensome yoke of running middleware on XP.
Where do I get one? Gimme, gimme, gimme.
