Subject: but how do you clean it?

I've got a wired Mighty Mouse and might consider the Bluetooth version if someone would just tell me how to clean the d%$n scroll ball. I can't scroll down with mine right now, because it needs cleaned just like an old mechanical mouse....

I'm on my second MM and I've followed all the tips and tricks to clean the scroll ball. The strange thing most people report a problem with scrolling down rather than any other direction.

I have had several Mighty Mice replaced under warranty because the scrolling would act up. I followed Apple's suggestions for cleaning the trackball which would fix it for a while then eventually it would act up again and no amount of cleaning would fix it. There is not easy way to disassemble the the unit and give it a good cleaning. Sidebar, it is not that my fingers are particularly dirty, but it seems that the Mighty Mouse is rather sensitive to any amount of grime.

Now if the problem is with a dirty trackball/rollers or not, it is a problem that I see chatted up a lot on Apple's forums.

The Cupertino Apple Store had this mouse at least 3 days ago, before the company even released it for the public!

You mean the campus company store? Is that supposed to be shocking? Geez I guess you should have joined 3 days ago and told us all about it. But after the fact? Sorry I'm just not impressed with your l33tness.

Guys I appreciate hearing this feedback on the mighty mouse's reliability though. I might have entertained the thought of getting one when I get a MacBook Pro, but now I am certain I will seek alternatives.

When it works, it works great. I like using the Mighty Mouse, it seems very precise and my LogiTech seems crude by comparison. The only thing I don't like are the side buttons which are too sensitive for me, I have them turned off in the Control Panel

I have both a Mighty Mouse and an Apple Pro Mouse connected and switch between them.

I am thinking that the next version of the Mighty Mouse would have some sort of track pad instead of a scroll ball. That would eliminate the dirt problem.

I have two corded Mighty Mice and have cleaned both of them sucessfully without disassembling them. Use a damp (not wet) woven (not terry) cloth laid out on a table, invert your mouse, and rub the sh!t out of it! It restored a severely malfunctioning scroll ball to functionality.

I've been waiting for them to release this! I'm going out to my local Apple store today to get one for my MBP.

Subject: Mighty Mouse & Skin Type

In my experience it might depend on the skin type of the Mighty Mouse user whether or not you have to clean the scroll ball regularly or not.

One of the people i work with has a rather oily type of skin & the scroll issues keep popping up. The scrollball needs cleaning almost every week.

I myself & my girlfriend never have any problem whatsoever with scrolling... We both have a very dry skin.

Just an observation...
