O'Grady: Apple May Drop ATI
by , 9:55 AM EDT, July 26th, 2006
Apple currently uses ATI graphics chips in some of its Mac models, but that may change now that Intel rival AMD is purchasing the video card company. Jason O'Grady says in his ZDNet blog that Apple's relationship with Intel may put the Mac maker in a position where it will change to NVIDIA's chips. Now that Intel has announced that it is not renewing its ATI chipset bus license, it may put pressure on Apple to stop using ATI products as well.
Mr. O'Grady says "Will Intel allow Apple to continue to working with ATI on graphics after the company becomes wholly owned by rival AMD? I think that we'll probably see Intel gently "suggest" that Apple switch to another vendor for graphics technology in 2007."
Apple already uses NVIDIA graphics technology in some of its Macs. The soon to be retired Power Mac G5 uses video cards from the GeForce line, and the Quadro FX 4500 is available as a built to order option. The Intel-based replacement for the G5, however, is rumored to come with ATI's Radeon X1600 Pro and X1800 Pro graphics cards.
If true, ATI's video cards may be short lived in Apple's pro desktop line up. Once the dust settles," he says, "I bet that all Macs from here on out will ship with graphics from either Intel or NVIDIA."
Observer Comments
they stick to dedicated graphics cards and not this integrated video crap that PCs come with where they use system RAM. Talk about hamper a product. I've worked with several laptops and desktops now and when a co-worker asked which he should buy, I had to immediately tell him to get a machine that has dedicated video.
Doing otherwise, he might as well have bought a Celeron.

The ATI Control Displays preference panel/application is really nice. (Download it from ATI's web site).
If Apple or Nvidia come out with a similar application or preference pane, where you can control the graphic settings for specific applications and 3D attibutes, I would have no preference between the two chipmakers. They are similar to Intel and AMD where depending on what time you are talking about one or the other, one of them is marginally better.
My only reservation is with having only one vendor for something.
Thu Jul 27, 2006 11:22 am Subject: Intel will play nice
Intel will not force Apple to abandon ATI. That would be an anti-trust violation. INtel is already being sued by AMD for those types of actions, which INtel is denying that it has done.
Intel might make it hard for Apple to continue using ATI (by not licensing its technology to ATI), but that is another matter. Moreover, nothing is preventing Apple from using AMD chips (although at the moment it seems Apple picked the better processor line-up).
