by , 4:25 PM EDT, July 27th, 2006

Daystar Technology on Thursday introduced a new XLR8 MAChSpeed upgrade for Titanium PowerBooks. Selling for US$449, the upgrade takes 800MHz to 1GHz computers to 1.33GHz and 550MHz to 667MHz machines to 1.25GHz. A 550MHz upgrade for 400MHz and 500MHz PowerBooks is also available for $249.

Three-way FedEx ground shipping is included for free. Daystar can also perform other upgrades while working on the processor swap-out, including a larger hard drive, more RAM, a new battery, a Dual-Layer SuperDrive, and a cooling handle.

The processor speed upgrade from this company may or may not be as fast as advertised.

I bought an upgrade from them and the processor speed, per System Profiler, is not as high as the advertised speed.

Mmm, why would anyone bother to go from 500 to 550?

That is strange. It would be considered fraudulent if it wasn't a bus speed and fine print issue (which is what I am betting on).
CPU's register at different speeds depending on your bus speed. The actual running speed is determined by the bus speed, and a multiplier. If you have a 100Mhz bus, even though a chip is rated for 933 MHz, you can really only get 900MHz out of it without overclocking it. There's probably a wiki on that if you want more info.

I find this surprising. Not that Apple System Profiler (ASP), reports incorrectly, but that you are a customer of Daystar. We educate each of our customers on the issues with Apple's bugs in Apple System Profiler.

In short, Apple System Profiler does not report speed based on the CPU speed. Apple hides this fact, so that customers don't wonder why there 867 PowerBook is running at 532 MHz most of the time (a power saving feature). Heck, the fastest PowerBook G4s ever shipped spend more time running at 835 MHz, than they do at full speed.

ASP reports only the "databased" speed of the unit. MAChSpeed Control (included with the upgrade) does profile the CPU speed via accurate speed tests. It patches the database/table that ASP uses with corrected information.

On some systems, due to the way Apple boots the system in "reduced speed", the system with MSC installed will report the boot speed in ASP. This happens on the PowerBook Titanium, and the 867 12". After that, Apple fixed its bugs, and they report correctly.

More on this issue is discussed at:
http://daystar-forum.com/forum3/112.html

In all cases, the system in High speed (set in Energy Saver), runs at the advertised speed, as can be confirmed via MAChSpeed Control, or by benchmarking. The system in "Reduced speed" as set in Energy Saver runs at about 75% of the speed on Titaniums, and 50% of the speed on Aluminums.
