Intel Launches Core 2 Duo Processor, Cuts Prices of Older CPUs

by , 1:10 PM EDT, July 27th, 2006

Intel on Thursday officially introduced its new Core 2 Duo processor, which is widely expected to find its way into the Intel-based Power Mac successor that Apple will likely announce at next month's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

At the same time, the company also cut the prices of its Pentium D processor, although that won't affect Mac users since none of Apple's computers utilize it. That decision was in response to AMD's price cuts on Monday, IDG News noted.

According to another IDG article, the Core 2 Duo ranges from 1.86GHz to 2.93GHz. There's also a mobile version aimed at laptops; there's little evidence whether or not Apple will use it in the MacBook Pro.

A product manager at Hewlett-Packard told IDG that while Core 2 Duo runs at slow clock speeds than its Pentium predecessors, it can handle more calculations per clock cycle, thus offering more performance while drawing less electricity.

That's not what I read. I read that Woodcrest is widely expected to be in the Intel-based Power Mac successor, with Core 2 Duo maybe filling the spot as the CPU in the low-end model.
