Newton Beats Origami in Smack Down

by , 11:45 AM EDT, July 28th, 2006

CNET UK pitted Apple's ten year old Newton MessagePad 2000 against Samsung's new Q1 ultra-mobile PC, and the Newton won. Despite the Q1's faster processor, newer operating system, color display and networking capabilities, the Newton still offered performance that an Origami-based PC just couldn't touch.

The Newton proved capable of performing many of the same tasks that the Q1 could handle, but also offered better computer synchronization, better stability, substantially longer battery life, and a lower price tag.

You can follow along with the blow-by-blow at the CNET UK Web site.

Totally unfair comparison.

They should've put the Origami-thing up against the Macintosh Portable. That would've been a fair match.

I'll tell you this--the Microsoft portable music player will blow the doors off a //e. Even with a ZipChip.

"The Newton proved capable of performing many of the same tasks that the Q1 could handle, but also offered better computer synchronization, better stability, substantially longer battery life, and a lower price tag."

Just what computer were they using to sync their Newton? While I can sync my Newton 2000 with my Dell PC, it won't communicate with my PowerMac nor my PowerBook. I don't know any way to get that done! It is sad that a great Apple product, which the Newton was and still is, can't communicate with any Macs produced, well, since at least 2003 or earlier!

The "nSync" communication software referenced by the article is not available.
