Trojan Horse for BlackBerry Developed

Trojan Horse for BlackBerry Developed

by , 10:45 AM EDT, August 10th, 2006

A proof of concept Trojan horse malware application for the BlackBerry portable email device has been developed. InfoWorld reports that security research specialist Jesse D'Aguanno demonstrated his code for the BlackBerry at the Defcon conference for hackers that ran from August 4 through August 6.

Mr. demonstrated the Trojan horse, which masquerades as a tic-tac-toe game, to show that companies need to look beyond their Macs and PCs, and consider the security risks of handheld devices, too. Research in Motion, the BlackBerry maker, has already released white papers describing how to protect BlackBerry servers from the attack.

The code for the Trojan horse will not be released, but the code for a second application used in the demonstration, called BBProxy, will.

God I can't believe crap this simple can get your name up in lights. It would take like 2 minutes to write a program that calls documented APIs to delete every possible file from your hard disk and then name the output file "FunGame". How does this prove anything? It's not Blackberry specific. It's the same thing we already know. Don't run a program that you don't trust.

It's like wearing a seatbelt when you drive. You don't need to prove over and over for every make and model of car that a seat belt helps.
