Boot Camp 1.1 Improves Hardware Support

Boot Camp 1.1 Improves Hardware Support

by , 8:50 AM EDT, August 16th, 2006

Apple released an update to Boot Camp, its utility that lets you boot Windows XP on an Intel-based Mac, on Tuesday. Boot Camp 1.1 beta adds support for the iSight camera and built-in microphones, improves Apple keyboard support, supports right-clicking with the right-hand Apple key, and supports the new Mac Pro. It also includes improved partitioning features, and lets you install Windows XP on any internal disk.

Boot Camp 1.1 beta is free and available for download at the Apple Web site. It requires an Intel-based Mac and Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later, and Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

Has anyone tried to install XP-64 bit edition on a Mac Pro? Since the new systems use 64-bit processors, and the XP-64 installer uses EFI rather than BIOS, i'd be interested to see if it works without Boot Camp

That's a good question. But I don't know what the advantages of using WinXP-64 are right now. There are a lot of support holes in the drivers. I am sure Apple hasn't written the drivers for it yet, or they'd be talking about it.

I'd honestly be shocked if Boot Camp included 64-bit Windows drivers. But I have no idea. Maybe they do. I'm just assuming, based on the fact most hardware still doesn't have Intel 64-bit or AMD 64-bit drivers, that Boot Camp probably doesn't. And if thats the case, then even if the 64-bit Windows installer completes, you'd have very little hardware support. Plus 64-bit XP kinda sucks anyhow, so you wouldn't be gaining much.

Same problem. No Vista drivers. Only 32-bit x86 Windows XP drivers are provided at the moment.

I just installed Windows XP 64 bit on my new 2.66 Mac Pro - it will boot into XP, but the boot camp drivers won't install so don't waste your time. Going to install the 32 bit version since I've installed it on a few MacBook Pros and it's been working fine.
