Apple Looking For Another MacBook Manufacturer

by , 7:45 AM EDT, August 17th, 2006

Apple is on the hunt for an additional factory to build MacBooks, and it looks like Foxconn Electronics - the same company that builds some iPod models - is on the short list. According to DigiTimes, Apple plans to contract Foxconn to produce a 15-inch version of the MacBook. If so, that will significantly blur the line between its pro and consumer portable Mac products.

Right now, Asustek is Apple's MacBook manufacturer, and Quanta Computer builds the MacBook Pro.

Earlier this year, Foxconn found itself in the middle of a labor law violation scandal involving its iPod production methods.

Why does *anyone* bother quoting DigiTimes? have they *ever* been right?

Subject: Not a real big news story since...

Foxconn HAS been tapped to make the internals for the Mac Pro. That is confirmed. Even mentioned in the Anandtech review of the beastly machines and documented in photos. I sincerely doubt a 15" MacBook is on the way though. So maybe digitimes got it HALF right this time.
