Canada's Sherway Gardens Store Opens September 2
by , 12:30 PM EDT, August 29th, 2006
The grand opening of Apple's third retail store in Canada at Sherway Gardens in Toronto, will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 2nd. In addition to the standard amenities, including the Genius Bar, this store will feature The Studio where customers can get one-on-one training from creative experts. Apple is planning a week long series of events to celebrate the Grand Opening, free training events and free prizes including T-shirts for the first 1000 visitors.
One lucky winner will walk away with the grand prize, a "Digital Lifestyle Collection" valued at CA$2,619.90, including a 17-inch flat-panel Intel Core Duo iMac, an iPod nano, a Canon PowerShot SD450 digital camera, a Sony Handycam CCD-TRV138, and an HP Deskjet 5440 printer.
For a complete list of events, and directions to the new store at the Sherway Gardens, visit the Apple Retail web site.

Trainer: Culturally, stylistically, and linguistically, the Canadians are a little different from us. Many Canadians still wear a mullet hair style, you know, short in front, long in back. This does not mean that they have meth habits or drive Camaros. In Canada, it may be an indication of great hockey prowess.
(Trainees furiously writing down notes.)
Trainer: Now linguistically... What do you do if a Canadian comes to you asking whether the computer has a boot disk?
Trainee: That's easy, he's only a little confused. Go to the Apple menu and choose "Aboot this Mac".
Trainer: Also, even though Canadians are funnier than crushed clowns, they don't like it when Americans celebrate their humor. They sometimes call this ethnic stereotyping in a lame attempt to be appear sensitive.
Trainee: Is it true that there is a Canadian named Dick Assman?
Trainer: Pronounce that Oss-mun. The hockey heads almost nuked us when Letterman did his gag with that.
There are of course many similarities too. Some Canadians are also somewhat prejudiced and tend to use ethnic stereotyping in an attempt to be funny. Like Americans however, most Canadians also tire very quickly of hackneyed, and largely inaccurate, attempts at humour.
Apple really does need to finally consider other cities. Though I get the impression they aren't finished saturating Southern Ontario yet. Look for another store in the Hogtown area, followed by one in maybe Hamilton and London before Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton see one.
Ah well, looks like I'll have to stick with mail-order from Compusmart. Moncton is big enough to support an Apple store though.
Apple's REALLY missing out on the oil boom in Alberta: Edmonton and Calgary could both easily support Apple stores (although Westworld computers does do a pretty decent job as a dedicated Apple store)

I love the way it's "Canada's" Sherway Garden's store, like people don't know where Toronto is. Well, maybe they don't, but it's sad if that's the case. Canada is bigger than the US for crissake, and all 3 stores are in Toronto, so isn't it a tad more accurate for the headline to read, "Toronto's Sherway Garden Store Opens Sept. 2"? Might also want to clarify that it's an Apple store in the headline, so maybe "Apple Store Sherway Gardens in Toronto opens Sept. 2".
Sorry, I'm just grumpy because I can't make it to the grand opening...

They really are missing out there, though they would likely have serious problems finding people to hire. The labour situation is pretty serious in Alberta, and is begining to harm the economy. They need some pretty hefty immigration to address the problem.
I've been to Westworld and was quite impressed. It's a good store.
Apple is opening another store in Laval, QC (north suburb of Montreal) on Sept. 9, so the expansion is definitely beginning! I think the reason they are opening so many stores in Toronto is because of the huge demand there has been on the first store at Yorkdale Mall. The Eaton Centre and Sherway Gardens stores will go a long way to easing the traffic at the first Canadian store.

There are hundreds of US cities bigger than Moncton (about 117K) that don't have Apple stores. I can name three just here in Oregon, which is not a populous state: Salem, Eugene, Medford.
Edmonton and Calgary, of course, are much larger, at 900K-1 M.
