Lenovo Laptop With Sony Battery Bursts Into Flames

by , 4:25 PM EDT, September 25th, 2006

A Lenovo Thinkpad T43 laptop equipped with the same Sony battery currently involved in recalls by Dell and Apple burst into flames at the Los Angeles International Airport this past Saturday. A spokesman for the computer manufacturer confirmed with Macworld UK that the incident was likely caused by a defective battery.

He added that Lenovo has the laptop in its possession and is "looking at it further right now. The investigation will take another 24 to 48 hours and then we will do whatever is in the best interests of our customers."

I'm not the first one to point this out but what's the deal with Sony laptops? They aren't exploding. They aren't getting recalled. Doesn't Sony use Sony batteries in their laptops? Or maybe they use the good ones and sell the "2nds" to everyone else.

Ah, sweet justice.

I am sure Lenovo exec's met about the battery situation and decided that they would just hope that this wouldn't happen... instead of doing the responsible thing and recalling the potentially defective batteries. They are lucky it didn't cause any injuries.

This is what Lenovo looks like with their pants down.

I think the potentially defective batteries came out of a particular factory. It is possible that the factory only manufacturers parts for other companies... which, well, begs the above question to be asked.

And if it could be shown that Sony knew that the batteries from this factory were sub standard....
