LaCie Ships New d2 eSATA II Drives

by , 1:20 PM EDT, September 26th, 2006

LaCie announced the immediate availability of its new d2 SATA II hard drive series on Tuesday. The new drives feature external SATA connections, 3Gbit interface speeds, Native Command Queuing, a 16MB cache, are hot swappable, and come in capacities up to 500GB. They are priced at US$149.99 for the 250GB model, $179.99 for the 320GB model, and $279.99 for the 500GB model.

Subject: still that silly sleep switch and can't open drive design

Lacie may have among the better Mac support options there, but they would save themselves a ton of trouble if:

1. They used a real on/off switch on their drives.
2. Added screws to their case so that if the Firewire/IDE bridge were to go, you could easily remove the drive and put it in another case.

3. I'd also prefer a built-in power supply and standard power cords. The din power cords are hard to find replacement parts for.

I broke a needle nose pliers trying to open the case to test whether the case or the drive had failed.

It would also be nice if they used a drive mechanism worth buying, instead of Maxtor. I was appalled when I found out that my 300GB LaCie was a Maxtor inside. I bought a Seagate the next day. I do miss the FW800 port, but I'd rather have my data.

Perhaps they've changed the design but I have two empty La Cie cases from which I removed drives after the bridge board went south (in each case not long after the end of the warranty period). Removing the drives from the case was easily accomplished by removing two screws on the rear of the case (one of which - - at the top - - was hidden by a label), and pushing the assembly in which the drive was mounted out of the front of the enclosure.
