IBM Says Better Mac Notes Support on the Way
by , 8:55 AM EDT, September 29th, 2006
IBM is working on improving its Notes client software for the Mac, and plans to offer "Mac fidelity" for its group collaboration software. CRN reports that IBM is beta testing a new version of its Notes Client for the Mac, and that it offers feature parity with its Windows compatible counterpart.
Mike Rhodin, IBM's Workplace, Portal and Collaboration group general manager, commented "We have millions of Notes seats on the Mac now, and some very large customers are active in the beta and are very vocal about that. The Mac is a resurgent platform."
He said that the new Mac Notes client will actually look like a Mac application, and that the 7.02 maintenance release will add iNotes Web client support.
Earlier this year, IBM pledged to support the Mac platform.
Observer Comments
We've been a Notes campus for about seven years. Mac support has been almost non-existent. The overall client feel is last decade.
And this month, the entire 37,000 people campus dumps Notes for MSExchange Servers.
Will it be better? Heck if I know. I'm a Mac user. I've had no interaction with it in any shape or form. But having been a Notes user, can it get any worse?
Ask me in a year.

Although I haven't used Notes ever, I can tell you that I had high hopes for Exchange support through Entourage. Unfortunately, there has been quite a few hiccups along the way. We started using Exchange about 16 months ago. It wasn't until the past couple of months that MS has finally seemed to work out almost all of the bugs. Here's to hoping they keep it straight going forward.
Of note, the biggest problems were calendar related. I had some pretty important people missing meetings because of bugs. We had to give one of our VP's a PC until the bugs were worked out. He wasn't happy, but at least he wasn't missing meetings.

The good thing about Exchange is you can use Mail.app to connect to it SO it you aren't forces to use the FPOS Notes client. So yes it will be better. We went the opposite way, and replaced Exchange with Lotus. The web client iNotes works better. Notes is GARBAGE on Windows too.
