Apple Issues Mac OS X v10.4.8

by , 2:45 PM EDT, September 29th, 2006

Apple on Friday updated Mac OS X "Tiger" to v10.4.8. The company said that it offers these fixes:

  • connecting to wireless networks using the EAP-FAST protocol
  • Apple USB modem reliability
  • using OpenType fonts in Microsoft Word
  • compatibility with 3rd party USB hubs
  • scanner performance
  • RAW camera support
  • printing documents with Asian language names
  • performance of the Translation widget
  • broadband network performance
  • security updates

Users can run Software Update to download it or visit the separate pages set up by Apple for PowerPC and Intel Mac owners.

Early birds,
How is this update? Any flaws or any improvements? What about crashed or 'dead' software?
I just want to know how safe this update is before I go ahead and update my iMac.
Thanks

Seems fine.

worms, worms. They are everywhere. Crawling out the back, out the CD slot opening ...

So far, so good. Don't forget to repair your HD and permissions beforehand. Turn off any stuff that starts automatically. Quit all apps. Don't interrupt the update. Don't use haxies until you know they've been tested. Simple rules to follow. I've never had a bad update, and I've been using Macs since 1991.

Be careful out there.

It's working fine. But when I rebooted on my Intel iMac, it took ages with the white screen (with the Apple logo), then spontaneously rebooted.

<shrug> It came up OK the second time.

Apple said, "After installing the delta version of this update on an Intel-based Mac, the computer will restart two times--the first restart after installing this update may take several minutes; please allow it to complete."

I find reading their KB articles before updating takes a lot of the guesswork out of what's going on.

Thank you for your first sentence. It was helpful.

Your second one was sarcastic and unnecessary.

That's funny...I thought it was a helpful comment, as I have found the same thing myself.

Many people don't know to go look there, and a lot of potential issues CAN be headed off by looking there first.

Guess I can't speak for Brandon's intent though...

Fingers crossed...downloading upgrade...

Subject: G4 Powerbook

I rebooted on my G4 mac after using Software Update. The Apple screen came up with the spinning wheel and sat there for well over 5 minutes. I heard no disk activity, so I held down the power button until it shut off. I restarted, it took a while, but everything came up OK.

I'm having a little problem with my Bluetooth icon in my Menu not showing or showing on the far left when it used to be on the far right (just left of the clock).

NOTE: I have a G4, not an intel processor.

Do you think I'm OK, or should I run the standalone to make sure the install is complete?

Thanks.
Brian

In other words, it now appears where it is supposed to be (with the other general icons) rather than sneaking in between Spotlight and the User menu on the far right.

Will this update finally allow me to play video clips on this intel machine? Probably not. Half the videos on the internet won't play on Apple machines.

It's not a problem with your machine. It's a codec issue.

That's probably because those videos use the Windows Media format, which is standard on Windows machines. However, Macs use QuickTime by default. Most sites offer you a choice between both. However, you may use a player like VLC to view videos in Windows Media format.

This update fixed an "awake from sleep" problem (i.e., I couldn't wake my machine from sleep) that I had been experiencing since the last update so I'm happy about that. But, Safari crashed on me once while trying to view a Quicktime movie from within the web browser. Hasn't happened since though.

I just realized that this update also seems to have fixed a fan problem where the fans in my PowerMac G5 dual processor would briefly rev up to full speed and sound like a wind tunnel quite frequently.
