HP Computers First to Receive Intel Quad-Core Chips

Hewlett-Packard workstations due to be introduced on Nov. 13 will run on Intel's new quad-core processors, dubbed Xeon 5300, according to IDG News. Rival AMD, which is wrapping up its purchase of graphics card maker ATI, isn't expected to launch quad-core processors before the middle of next year.

Reporter Ben Ames noted that AMD claims to have the advantage in quad-core by using a design superior to Intel's, "which essentially glues two dual-core chips together," he wrote. Without hardware to run tests on and make comparisons, however, it's impossible to know which design performs better.

HP's computers will be aimed at high-end markets, where users are focused on CAD, digital content, and other hardware-intensive tasks. Mainstream desktops should see a version of the processor called "Core 2 Quad" during the first quarter of 2007, while a gaming version known as "Core 2 Extreme" will soon be shipped to OEMs.

Wrong! Quad-Core Intel chips don't exist (outside the lab & testing) until November. Your Crapple... oh, excuse me... "Apple" is running two (2) dual core Xeons. This is clearly stated in the very article you referenced!

Gee, Ted, haven't heard the term "crapple" since my last conversation with 12 year old 1337 |-|4x0|2 gamerz.

And we are very impressed with your random listing of computer hardware. Really, we are. Honest. Might try to get out of the server room for a bit, though. It is greatly affecting your ability to interact with others in a civil way. Besides, the weather is nice down there in Miami. Go out and enjoy it.

Dawg-- The reburb machines have (2) dual core processors. Effectively yes it's a quad machine. But 2 processors. The new Intel chip will have (4) cores on one chip. This chip will by a quad processor. With all the cores on on chip it will be faster.

It makes sense for HP to get the first runs. They will also pay a hefty price for the pleasure. There's no reason for Apple to race into adoption of this chip series until the price begins to drop. The price/benefit ratio is decidedly against immediate adoption at the desktop level, even for creative pros. What's a couple/few months wait?
