Sony: Sorry About the Batteries

Sony: Sorry About the Batteries

by , 12:35 PM EDT, October 24th, 2006

Sony executives publicly apologized on Tuesday for the manufacturing issues that led to a massive recall of laptop batteries the company produced. At a news conference in Tokyo, Sony's Corporate Executive Officer, Yutaka Nakagawa, said "We would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the worries," according to Forbes.

The battery recall was issued because of the risk of overheating and potential fire hazards caused by batteries that contained small metal fragments in their power cells. The batteries were manufactured for several companies including Apple Computer, Dell, Lenovo, and Toshiba. To date, about 9.6 million batteries are included in the recall.

The recall includes batteries used in certain PowerBook G4 and iBook G4 models.

Sony claims that the manufacturing flaw that led to the defective batteries has been corrected. The company also said that none of its leadership team would be resigning over the incident.

Very refreshing. I'm glad they did away with customary suicide after taking the blame though. That was a little over the top.

This sounds more like an American company than a Japanese one to me. I guess they are following in our footsteps. Too bad - that explains why the quality of my 2003 Honda Accord isn't much better than that of a GM, and why the dealer hasn't been able to fix it in 6 weeks! Soon, 'Made In Japan' won't be any better than 'Made In America'. More disposable junk for the landfills...

More than likely that Accord was actually made in America.
