Report: Apple Drops Justin "I'm a Mac" Long for Next Ads
Report: Apple Drops Justin "I'm a Mac" Long for Next Ads
by , 5:55 PM EST, November 8th, 2006
Apple Computer has dropped Justin Long, the "I'm a Mac" actor in the "Get a Mac" commercials, for its next round of ads, according to an exclusive report by Radar. The publication said that Justin Long's management had confirmed that he will not be starring in future Apple commercials, and that more commercials featuring John Hodgman as the "I'm a PC" character are being produced.
"Every ad you see Justin in is for that previous time period only," Justin Long's representative told Radar. "There's no long-term deal with him. Justin's a movie star, not a commercial guy."
The article cited unnamed sources as saying that the original director of the spots, Phil Morrison, will be returning with Mr. Hodges to produce more commercials.
The article suggests that Mr. Long's character was unliked by many, and that this was why he will not be returning. That suggestion is merely speculation, however, and no sourceable reasons for his departure are being offered.

New Macs are in the offing! Probably in time for the holiday buying season! We will see a new actor, someone who needs a job. Hmmm, how about this:
Enter Kevin Federline, "Hello, I am the new Mac"
Seriously Justine is probably going to start work on a movie. Either that or he is the new afternoon editor at MacObserver.

Is Justin going to become Justine? Perhaps he ... er, (s)he can hook up with "K-Fed," who should be in the market for a new partner, now that Slutney Spears has kicked him out. I know very, very little about those two--and even that's WAY too much, but it seemed like they deserved each other. They reminded me of a wedding I went to over 30 years ago. The groom was noted as being an obnoxious boor and the bride was said (I didn't know her) to be a demanding, self-obsessed nag. A guy who knew them both said, "Well, at least, this way, there will be only two unhappy people, instead of four."

He's already been busy. Currently filming "Live Free or Die Hard"," and he will start dubbing the title character's voice for "The Tale of Despereaux" next year.

No, John "I'm a PC" Hodgman is going to switch and become the Mac. The PC will be played by Donald Rumsfeld. This is the real reason he bailed from the Sec. of defense job.
You may be onto something there. Not the Rumsfeld part of it, but John switching to the Mac.

The reason Justin was thrown out of his job as a Macintosh computer guy is for his remarks about his job as the Mac Man on the Conan OBrian show last month. He does not even like to use computers, much less the Mac he casually explained to Conan. My wife and I sat up straight and said "Well that was a stupid thing to say!" Guess Apple got wind of the national airing of Justin's ignorance of the Mac and his days as our hero are now over....just in time for Apple to get someone in the ads who knows what the heck they are representing to the world.
John, the PC, is able to run Mac OS X. "HI, I'm a PC... and now I'm a Mac! Man, I hated being a PC, but now I can run this Mac OS X instead of Windows and do all sorts of cool stuff! And I only have to wear that suit if I have to..."
Dell announces it is now giving an option of Windows or Mac OS X. Vista is still nowhere to be seen.
Hmmm....
Yeah, the possibility of PC switching over occurred to me early on in the series, but the possibility of Apple actually licensing OS X to another hardware company is slim at best. Hell, if Dell (but I repeat myself) started selling OS X instead of Windows as an option then I would hasten my adoption of Linux as more than an affordable "other computer" alternative. The last thing we need is a world where everyone with a screwdriver can build a computer capable of running OS X, albeit inconsistently and generally unstable due to poor driver support.
While the advertising potential is vast, I hope that's not the business plan Apple has in mind.
