Safari Climbs Over 4 Percent in November

Safari Climbs Over 4 Percent in November

by , 9:20 AM EST, December 1st, 2006

Safari continues its upward climb in Web browser market share, ending November up over four percent for the first time. Safari finished the month in third place with 4.03 percent of the market, up from 3.93 percent in October. Firefox is still in second place with 13.5 percent of the browser market, up from October's 12.96 percent, based on statistics from Market Share.

Continuing its slow downward spiral, Microsoft's Internet Explorer dropped from 81.28 percent to 80.56 percent.

Microsoft Windows Vista was released earlier this week for business users, but that isn't likely to have a significant impact on Web browser usage statistics. When the consumer version is release at the end of January 2007, however, there is a chance Internet Explorer could start grabbing more market share for the first time in several months - assuming consumers buy the operating system.

Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 operating system is due to hit store shelves in the first part of 2007, and that may help boost Safari's number higher as more Windows users switch to the Mac.

I'm hoping to see IE slip under 80% soon. Even if it never goes lower than that... a sub 80% will make me happy. I use on my PC, sometimes, and aside from security issues, it's fine, but it's terrible support for CSS standards makes my job a lot harder than it needs to be.

that it jumps just as I'm transitioning the three computers in my home from Safari to OmniWeb! I'm sure that will have an impact.

Really guys... I'm a Mac user and enthusiast. But cheering for Safari market share points is waaaaay too much.

Isn't there anything more productive for you to do?

(Not that it is anymore productive to post this to you, but you get the point.)

I use Safari and the higher market share it has the more web designers/programmers will have to make their sites web accessible to other than Explorer.

Safari will probably have much less "impact" on that decision than Firefox will. Of course, if web designers would stick to established international standards, there wouldn't be a problem using their web sites with various browsers. Several "IE-only" site owners have said that they "can't" make a good commercial site without using IE-specific features. I just give them this URL:

http://www.amazon.com/

and ask why they "can't" do it, but Amazon can? I have yet to get a reply to those emails. The real answers are 1) laziness; 2) job security-can't replace the web designer as easily; 3) misplaced loyalty to Microsoft; and, primarily, 4) the "we-don't-give-a-sh*t-about-customers-because-we're-the-experts-and-know-everything" attitude.
