Microsoft Releases Mac Office Security Update

Microsoft Releases Mac Office Security Update

by , 6:55 PM EST, December 12th, 2006

Microsoft's Mac Business Unit released Tuesday the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.1 Update. The company said that the update includes security and stability enhancements, but stressed that it includes, "fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code."

The update applies to: Office 2004 Standard Edition, Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition, Office 2004 Professional Edition, Word 2004, Excel 2004, PowerPoint 2004, Entourage 2004.

You can download the update through the Microsoft Update application installed with Office, or from the company's Mac site. The update file is 13.7MB.

Subject: Links don't work

The download links on the Microsoft page referenced above do not work. This seems to be the correct page, but the links all result in 404 (File not found) errors. Typical f***-up. I've seen this sort of thing happen all too often on commercial/professional web sites. If I were in charge, whomever was responsible for that page--and his/her supervisor--would be looking for a new job with no recommendation. Such an error is completely inexcusable. The designers are professionals and there are utilities that can automatically check the links on a web page before it is published.

Is it a FrontPage site?

I just tried to download the update and got this:

You are not authorized to view this page

You do not have permission to view this directory or page due to the access control list (ACL) that is configured for this resource on the Web server.
Please try the following:

Contact the Web site administrator if you believe you should be able to view this directory or page.
Click the Refresh button to try again with different credentials.
HTTP Error 401.3 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to an ACL set on the requested resource.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

Technical Information (for support personnel)

Go to Microsoft Product Support Services and perform a title search for the words HTTP and 401.
Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr), and search for topics titled About Security, Access Control, and About Custom Error Messages.

The Microsoft Auto-Update app doesn't seem to find the update either. For me, anyway.

Word on Versiontracker and other boards was this "update" completely abd utterly destroyed some installations of Office, generally messed up peoples computers and left them "MS Officeless" which is not an entirely BAD thing. But it still broek stuff. My guess is MS pulled it to fix it.

Typical Microsoft can't get anything to work right these days. They release an update that no one can use. And the auto update in Office can't find any updates either. Probably some bozo and Microsoft put it on an IE7 server.

Sure enough, the download links on Microsoft's Web site are all bad, and the Office Auto Update feature doesn't see the 11.3.1 update, either. I'm looking into this now, and I'll let everyone know what Microsoft has to say about the situation.
