Microsoft Office Update Posted in Error

Microsoft Office Update Posted in Error

by , 1:10 PM EST, December 13th, 2006

Microsoft posted a notice on Wednesday about the accidental posting of a security update for MS Office for Mac.

The post says, in part, "As soon as we discovered the error, we moved quickly to address it and remove the pre-release binaries from our public sites. Once our investigation into this issue is complete and we have security updates that meet our quality bar for release, we’ll release those final security updates for all products affected along with a security bulletin.  We’re also taking steps to ensure a mistake like this doesn’t happen again."

Microsoft recommends that anyone who has installed the pre-release update uninstall it.

Digg!

How would one uninstall this rogue update?

I went to shut down the desktop on the way to bed, and saw this autoupdate thing on the screen. Thinking about the issues I'd heard about lately, I went ahead and installed it.

I have no idea what's going to happen next time somebody opens Weird. If uninstalling the update means wipe Office and re-install that, I guess I'll do it.

Does anyone know how I remove it?

don't uninstall the update!! the only reason microsoft is taking it back, is because they realized that it unlocks GOD mode on your mac, enabling you, through a simple spike, to burst any PC into open flames, from the convenience of your office/living room/coffee shop, over a wireless internet connection.. that was the *real* story behind the sony battery recall..

. . . why not release more damaging updates and trash everything. It's ironic that some of us depend on a Microsoft product on a Macintosh. As soon as I can wrap my head around it I am going to move my 2GB database to Thunderbird.

Microsoft is dicking us around. I never had any problems with Entourage or Office until the 11.2.3 update and all hell broke loose. Because the update alters the database so that you can not go back.

They're fools and we're fools to use M$.

Again a reminder of what sh*t can happen with automatic updates.

Unless there is an urgent need (and when will that be?) to install updates the second they are released, just wait some days and see if any reports come in of installations gone wrong. If they do not, then install the updates.

"that meet our quality bar for release"

I just have to laugh at that phraseology. How high do they normally set their "quality bar" - buried in a trench?
