Some Computers are Not Ready for Daylight Saving Time
Some Computers are Not Ready for Daylight Saving Time
by , 1:20 PM EST, January 26th, 2007
Not every computer operating system now running is ready for the automatic switch to Daylight Saving Time (DST) when it arrives on March 11th, 2007. Charles Moore at The Low End Mac discussed the situation, another possible "Y2K" scenario, on Friday.
Mac OS X has been patched to account for the new, earlier change over since version 10.4.6. However, anyone using a previous version, or legacy Mac OS will have to make the adjustment manually.
Steve Wiseman, cofounder of IntelliAdmin, LLC told Mr. Moore, "Microsoft is only providing patches for their supported software. This means that Windows 2000 will not be patched by Microsoft since they no longer support it. We have created an unofficial patch that will fix Windows 2000, and NT systems."
Additional information about Daylight Saving Time (not Daylight Savings Time) can be found at WebExhibits.

If you're running Panther or Jaguar still, don't expect to do any online banking or secure transactions between March 11th and early April. I'm pretty sure that the security certificates needed to encode the SSL websites will be too far out of date.
Personally, I think Apple should patch 10.3.9 for this since they're still patching security holes in it (or are they?... they never discuss when they stop). Or at least they should make a statement warning of this issue, and let people know they aren't going to patch it.

If you have broadband (and most do), doesn't your Mac automatically update clock from the time server? I know there is an option in the system preferences for time and date to turn automatic setting off, but, if memory serves me well, it is on by default.
I'm sure this was built-in feature in all flavours of OS X (including cheetah and puma).
I believe that all time standards are Universal Time (UT), then the computer applies a local time zone offset. If the local offset is not correct, local time will be wrong.

Fri Jan 26, 2007 6:28 pm Subject: Time zome editor
There is a thing called Windows nt time zone editor. The file name is called tzedit.exe. This was part of Windows 95 kernel toys. Even through it's say nt. It will work on 95, 98, 98se, ME, Nt, Xp, Xp sp1, Xp sp2 and possible even windows 2000. Just be careful if you get all the kernel toys. Some of those others programs will mess up windows 98 and up. The time zome editor will not mess up any system that I am aware of. Also, after the change over date. Some appointments may or may not be an hour off.
Macs deal with the wrong date and time all the time and not much comes of it. Ever have an internal PRAM battery die on you an the date set back to either August 27, 1956 or January 1, 1904 (depending on the Mac)? Ever have a Mac inside a company network behind a firewall and not be able to see an Apple (or other) timeserver and miss DST? ever have someone check or uncheck the DST box in the date/time control panel? That has all happened to people I support - and the worst to have come from it all was an e-mail or file save date that was an hour off.
Come back when you have some links to patches for Mac apps or the OS - aside from the 10.4.6 patch. Otherwise this workaround should suffice:
1) Open System Preferences --> Date & Time.
2) Set time to correct time OR a different time zone with the correct time if you want to get fancy.
3) Go play.
I hereby challenge the Mac community to find apps that actually break because of the DST offset and post them here - with patches or status of patches.
I do not think this article suggested that any Mac applications would break. Mac users, however, are used to their computers automatically adjusting for daylight savings time. In this case, it will not do so. This might cause some people problems. For instance, some people use their computers as alarm clocks. Some people use their computers just to know what time it is.
Moreover, many secure websites will not work if your computer's date and time are off. Some users might be puzzled as to why their Macs suddenly can't connect to these sites.
Of course, the linked to article suggests applications may break. If you count Safari all the sudden not being able to connect to a website as breaking, then OK. Otherwise, silly really.

I am not certain why a Mac website is discussing Microsoft's problems, but here is a fix for Windows 98.
