Apple's "Get a Mac" Ads Spoofed - With a Sting
by , 2:00 PM EST, January 26th, 2007
A quartet of very clever, very well done spoofs of the Apple "Get A Mac" ads was posted at MacMerc on Friday. They were created by Laurie McGuinness, and provide a, well, different viewpoint.
This time, the tables are turned.
Observer Comments
The ads look like they could be good, and they start to go after the right topics, but fail to make their point in the end. The first one doesn't explain why the mac only gets (I'm presuming) a twenty (designers don't make much, they cost too much, what...). The second one make even less sense. Mac users can't attract good looking women (my wife, who is a mac user, is actually quite hot)? Or is it the sequel to the first one, since the PC had money left over he got a prostitute. The third one, if a mac is ever late getting work done it's because the PC server crashed, and last time I checked The Urge store charged $0.99 for music too. But good luck trying to find some one with an Zune to share it with.

THE ADS ARE STUPID. ONE AD ASSUMES MAC USERS MAKE LESS MONEY THAN PC USERS? YOU CAN GO TO THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY AND SEE THAT AD EXECUTIVES AND ART DIRECTORS AND CREATIVE DIRECTORS MAKE MONEY THAT ARE ON PAR WITH WHAT PEOPLE IN BUSINESS MAKE, IF NOT MORE.
Actually, I saw a survey result at one time that showed that Mac users earned a lot more than PC users on average. It was a while back and I don't know if it was redone recently.

I liked video #3 when PC asks Mac "are you high?" and Mac responds "Mrmh?", just like Ellen in her fateful commercial. Priceless!
Meanwhile, it's goes without saying Mac owners earn more than PC owners - Macs cost more, right?
Now, back to my regularly scheduled tax return. Must. Write off. Macs...

Well, these are certainly better then that awful Zune-iPod one. (From some Microsoft party?)
The fourth one (Music) actually made me laugh with it's bizarreness until the punchline came out and ruined it a bit. (iTunes is better at sharing then many alternatives, and Macs can pirate just as well as PCs.)
I've definitely seen better.
First of all, as noted above, many of us have very sexy significant others. The first time I took my wife to a Mac store, shortly before we were married, she saw the 17" PowerBook and said, "That's the sexiest thing I've ever seen." I wasn't offended in the least bit. Personally I've seen sexier (my wife for instance), but it is quite attractive.
In fact, I know of certain undeniably attractive women who use Macs and who most guys would happily choose over the woman in the spoof. Perhaps you've heard of them? http://www.macobserver.com/article/2006/08/07.4.shtml
The only stab at sexy that I can recall from the Windows camp is the woman in agony on the Zune install error screen. Not much to be proud of.
The money issue has been discussed. For years. PC fanatics accuse Macs of not useful for gaming, and in the same breath call them toys. I find it so thoroughly humorous any time someone talks negatively about Macs and anything relating to money because my Mac was a great deal and the single most profitable investment I've ever made.
So, yeah. Kinda funny, but generally just dumb. And, I'm sorry, where was the sting? That people have to pay $1 to buy a song? That the PC thought he was first to show up with something?
Maybe I just don't get it. Sad that someone spent their time on this. Maybe they should add a rimshot or laugh track to help us poor, slow Mac users know when to laugh.

You Mac defender guys are scary. You take this Mac vs. PC thing waaaaay too seriously. It's two companies battling it out in the marketplace. Don't take it personally. It's not as if you're major AAPL stockholders.
Funny, considering the number of Windows fanatics who complain about how "stupid" and "insulting" the Get a Mac ads are towards Windows users. It's also scary that you felt compelled to come here and say that...

Been using Mac since 1985. These are funny parodies - funnier though are the comments by the overly smug, self-righteous Mac-users.
Chill friends - these are jokes!
No, they're not jokes. First, Jokes have to be funny. These are not. Insults can be funny (find an old Don Rickles routine), but these are just plain mean. I don't care WHAT they're about. They're NOT funny. Intruder was being kind by saying, "Mildly amusing."
Second, they aren't jokes because jokes have to be based on some easily-recognized common experience, even if it's an "inside" joke within some particular community/group. Most of these are obscure to the point of being impenetrable. It's hard to tell what the "music" parody is about--Macs vs PCs, iPods vs Zune, what?
Look at these as if you're neither a Mac nor PC fan. They tank from the first few words.
The first is so obscure that it requires being an "insider" to figure out just what it means. (Even then, it flops because it's not true.)
The second, besides being sexist, implies that the PC guy got the girl because he has money, as he is nowhere near as good-looking as the Mac guy.
The third is just plain insulting. The PC guy comes across as a smug a**hole. (The shirt he is wearing is TERRIBLE, especially with that tie. It's like watching a badly-distorted rerun of a 1970s TV show.) Smug a**holes are not even pathetic. They're certainly not funny, except as an object of derision.
The fourth is even more obscure than the first. What "sharing" is it referring to? (Again, it may be putting forth an untruth.)
The Get a Mac ads have never had the Mac insult the PC. In fact, he often compliments the PC. Those ads ARE funny, for the most part. (Better Results is a classic, as is Self Pity[/]. [i]Goodwill is actually a bit touching.) These attempts at parody are mean (even cruel), poorly written, and "acted" by guys who wouldn't get a part in a middle school play, based on their "performances" here.

Precisely. It's like watching a really lame standup "comic" who's dying in front of an audience who is so bored that they don't even heckle him.
If this is the best that this professional copywriter can do, he may need to find another business. (His website is, frankly, annoying.)
What a waste of time. Perhaps I can recyle the bits into something useful.

No, they were jokes. Humour is such a personal thing, if you don't get it, well, you just don't get it. Don't worry about it. Personally, I don't get Don Rickles. Is it an American thing?
As an alternative, look at these: http://www.apple.com/uk/getamac/ads/
Lots of people don't think the GetaMac ads are funny either. Spoofed or unspoofed.
I liked the pie-chart one…but that's just me.
